Re: Dvap junkyard in Phoenix AZ/Discovery Channel show

The sick part about the 68 charger episode last night for me was the "they have the same lines and look as the 2011 charger" BS, just because they put some dents in the hood and the doors doesn't make it a 68-70 charger. i get really frustrated watching that show.

Then the 66 chevelle, its a factory white car and that moronic old guy wants it triple black because "he had one" big deal, its about the money, make it original as possible and make more money. Gesus, the guy has tons of them. ((edit) retract statement above, was in bad mood when i shot my mouth off)

Its always funny how they find the little stuff. The 66 seats, the 396 emblems (just happen to be laying in cars covered in dirt, amazing. lol.

My Rant for the day.

They call this reality TV? could not be more scripted. They are just reading lines. I think I would put a screwdriver thru the temple after listening to them working for a day. Nice parts yard, not worth listening to "well he's the boss" for an hour.

Re: Dvap junkyard in Phoenix AZ/Discovery Channel show

Don't you love how they do a "restoration" paint job in a dirty, cheap junk yard garage. The paint on those cars looks awful from 10 ft. I forget which car it was but they had to repaint the quarter panel because the primer(or bondo) was showing through. They pull a junk yard motor out of the yard and when they manage to get it running they spray bomb it and call that "putting a new engine" in it. I will give them credit in one area though, they appear to have some decent interior work done on the cars.

Re: Dvap junkyard in Phoenix AZ/Discovery Channel show

They have a very cool yard but its so scripted that its painful to watch. One thing that caught my attention last night was the "customers" pulling up in show quality cars looking for junk yard parts. Like the lady in the 69 camaro....come on.

Re: Dvap junkyard in Phoenix AZ/Discovery Channel show

Like most of you I watch the show for entertainment, but sometimes I just say to myself "come on". They pull these 40 or 50 year old motors out of a pile someplace and try to fire them while they are sitting on the ground. If they make them fire, they use them. I have no way to see all they do, however I have never seen them pull a single head or drop an oil pan. If it fires it gets used. Sometimes I wonder if they change the oil or just "top it off". They were frantically looking for the correct emblems for the Chevelle, saying the value would be destroyed if they could not find them. All those emblems have been available for years. And Impala Bob is right there. But in the end, I guess they get what they want. I watch the show. I would like to spend a few days knocking around the junk yard. Sorry if this got too long.

actually the car was meadowlark yellow not white and the old man Ron? decided to paint it back to the stock color to treat the car properly and as far as them "finding the emblems in the dirt" you must never go to any older junk yards whare the customer goes out and pulls their own parts. I don't know how many times I've gone to a older yard and found the small part I wanted in the dirt next to or in the back of the car or in a car on the other side of the yard

Re: Dvap junkyard in Phoenix AZ/Discovery Channel show

I watched the Buick or Olds? not sure what car? "restore" last night.....uugghh. I couldn't believe that high rent auction let them put it in there. It had a pretty bad kink in the frame and the guy just chained it down, heated it up and straightened it right up. It's hard for me to watch the show just because I find myself over critical of everything they do. I know they mean well but seriously who doesn't knock the rust off the back side of a fender before they mount it? I'm sure they are great people, they need to stick to selling parts. They are kind of builds you would hate end up owning because you got excited at an auction.

Yellow, white, beige, off white, whatever.

I'm glad all went well with it, and i retracted my statement, lots of DVAP lovers here, and that is very cool.

I have been junk yarding for 20+ years. I have never run across acouple 396 emblems just tossed in the dirt. Seen them in the car, in the glove box, console, on the fenders, grill, etc etc. Anyway, i'm just rambling now. Lets all have a

Wow, that's something. Thanks for the invite, but you have a better shot of hitting the power all than me getting to AZ. I been to fla once, and Chicago, other than that, I never leave new England. Not that I wouldnt like to, but I don't fly unless forced to.

Re: Dvap junkyard in Phoenix AZ/Discovery Channel show

I gotta say that I'm not particularly impressed with the show or the "work" that they do to the cars on the show. However, I realize that it's a TV show, and certain "liberties" are taken for the sake of time and drama to make the show more interesting or move along easier. I live in Tucson, so I fully intend to head up to DVAP one of these days, and I've actually heard a great deal of positive things about the folks that own the yard up there. I don't think I'll be watching the show, though. 19 seconds and change for a 383 Charger to run the quarter? Really? Before that, one of the guys says, "Anything under 20 seconds is respectable for a musclecar." If I owned a musclcar that ran in the 19's, I sure as heck wouldn't tell anybody about it! That car should have at least run in the 15-second range for a well running Charger with a "new" 383. It seems like they do kind of make things up as they go along sometimes. I don't want to sound like I'm hating on the folks at DVAP, cause I'm not trying to, but the show is a stinker for sure.

I have watched the show and dont think you can call what they do a restoration but I do like seeing all the cars in the yard. I just wish that when you went to their site and did a search for a part no matter what it is it would not come up non found I searched for some very basic parts and none found in the pics on this post I saw at least a couple of complete trucks so I know they have some of the parts I did a search for.

I admit I watch the show, It makes me feel good about the "restorations" I do. those guys are pretty sorry. it's one thing to do a cheap freshening up on a old classic. its quite another to do a half ass job like they do. like put in a sad old junk yard engine, do a rattle can rebuild on it. paint over rust, grease, and grim on the underside of those cars. Id hate to see what the bodys look like up close. there is a reason they dont bring much at there auctions

Re: Dvap junkyard in Phoenix AZ/Discovery Channel show

yeah i've seen quite a few episodes since its came out on late nite DC. i hate that they take those motors and rattle can rebuild and toss them in. i also hate how the old man runs through the yard and takes what he wants and doesn't even remove the part from the system. like with gto build that they took to the high dollar auction. they "combed" the yard and then all of a sudden there in the old man's private stash the parts they need magically show up. and the acting is so horrible. but the builds tend to look HALF decent IMO. but i think the acting on Gold Rush is better. not to get too far off track here, but how did the guys from Gold Rush come up with another quarter mil to dig somewhere else?

I guess I'm the minority here but....I like the show. It's just a TV show and the guys are not actors but I think it's fairly entertaining. One thing I really like is seeing the huge graveyard for old cars and trucks.....large junkyards like that are virtually a thing of the past. I would LOVE to walk around that place!

I kinda like the show. Just not the restoration part of it. I know they are trying to make it enterainment. It's just hard to watch some of their methods.
They actually called some the cars restored. It's more like fixed up a little. And yes, I could spend all day there just looking at the cars/trucks. We have very few yards like that around at all anymore. Most of the yards around here crush everything when it sits around for a certain period of time.

I watch the show every week and I take it for what it is (Entertainment) I would like to just walk around and look at old vehicles. I would also like to see his private stash where the son found all the parts for the GTO. They definetly have a crap load of cars and trucks.
