Re: Did you really BUILD your truck?

You'll never fix the posers but who cares. I do everything but final paint, but that doesn't mean I don't get help sanding, hanging, fitting wireing etc.. along the way. Who knows, if I had a magic checkbook I'd probably build some things with a pen...

Re: Did you really BUILD your truck?

So far all me and the original factory workers. When it comes to paint though. I'll let the professionals handle that..atleast on the rides I'm planning to keep.

Re: Did you really BUILD your truck?

Seems like a pretty shallow question/discussion, I'll keep my comments to myself.

Bottome line, wheter you build it or pay to have it built, both are still an automobile enthusiast, and not someone who is trying to kill our hobby, but preserve it.

Taking credit for others work, not good...I agree.

Re: Did you really BUILD your truck?

Even if I pay someone to do the work, I look at is as I still "built" it. Might have not gotten my hands dirty on somethings but you know what? The picture of what I wanted it to look like, stance/wheels/color/motor etc etc.. Is in my head, and my head alone.

The people that get paid to do this are being told by the customer exactly what they want. Im a perfectionist, I can tell you my work skills arnt on par with some of you guys. If I have to pay someone to make it perfect then so be it. I will be 100% satisfied in the end. Even if it takes me 10 yrs to complete!

My favorite quote - "It's not what you buy, it's what you build". But there is nothing wrong with knowing your limitations and are straight up about who helped you out.

Re: Did you really BUILD your truck?

I built my truck from the ore in the ground.

But after all that forging and stamping I passed off the body work to a body shop. Tires are hard to make.

And as far as all future modifications go they will be in house

I thought mine was the only one built by GM???? I'm kinda in the same boat but I'm changing what GM built into my own expresssion and what I think my Dad would have liked it to be. I'm going to do as much of it as I can in my garage with the help of mechanic friends.

Re: Did you really BUILD your truck?

Yep, of course with help of buddies here and there. Only the Rhino lining, interior upholstery, exhaust and custom A/C lines were farmed out. A buddy and I even painted it. Paint job cost $150 in materials and a case of beer. I painted my ’68 myself. Turned out pretty decent for a 20 year old kid doing the work at the time (1992).

With these old trucks you have to do the work yourself or you will go broke paying someone to do the work for you.

Bought a 1987 v10 shortbed for $500 3 years ago. Did new ball joints, locking hubs, shocks, wheel bearings, front brakes, fuel pump, new motor, and a bunch of sensors and belt driven parts. If it breaks I fix it. I know that I didn't build it, but I drive the heck out of it and will keep working on it. More mine every day.

I dont have the time or place or money or experience to do a frame off restoration. But I do all my own repairs and feel like I've just about had sex with that 700r4 under the truck. My wife rebuilt the carb and it looks like crap and runs like crap but its ours and we're damn proud of her...

Bough a 1985 V8 longbed for $500

This made me laugh very hard. Thank you!

Quick question, did you guys use robots on the production line back then? I'd really like to be able to say that my truck was built by robots...

Yes. The cab shop (where the body was welded together) was highly automated, and some robot sprayers in the paint shop.

Not so much in trim and final.

Re: Did you really BUILD your truck?

Thanks Keith. I kind of figured.

I was 17 when my truck came off the line. I remember the farm I worked on got a brand new Siverado K30. Dark grey with silver and the red/orange stripe package. To this day, I think it was one of my all time favorite vehicles. I got to plow with it a bit and was always very happy with it! For me, a "Chevy truck" will aways be a square body.

Oh yah... hey guys! My truck was built by robots!!!

A tired warrior of the 1980s in a world of low profile tires, front wheel drive, and plastic bumpers, where people stay in their houses until snowplows move the offending substance from their paths, too helpless to travel without AAA and chains and salt, clearing their windows with longhandled brushes while gently stepping around in the snow trying to stay nice and dry.

Re: Did you really BUILD your truck?

Who are you trying to please with your build? Yourself, or a bunch of people you only know from the intarnetz?

It's a car show trophy, not a damn nobel peace prize. The VW scene gets real stupid about built VS bought. Like people getting into fist fights over it and stuff.
