turns out, this thing has no EGR valve or cat. Strange to me for some reason.

Re: Doing a trade. Caddy for a pickup.

Going to turn this into my build thread. So far i havent done a whole lot to it. Just been cleaning it up. Removed the fog lights and the banner across the windshield. Right now im in the middle of sanding and painting the wheels and swapping the truck bumper for a blazer bumper. Next items of business are a new muffler from my buddy Tim and re dye the door panels. Then it needs a new stereo of some sort. Debating on one of those neat new/old stereos($$$) or a new cheepy stereo with knobs ($$). After that, I really want a set of rally wheels and new tires. After that its time to get serious and fix what is basically THE rust spot on the thing in the driver rocker/floor board. Anyway, on to some pics!!!

These are pretty much right after i got it.

And a couple of my personal fleet!

Re: Doing a trade. Caddy for a pickup.

Here it is as of 9-20-11.

Here is the old bumper,

New bumper,

New bumper on! There is only two bolts going threw the frame right now.

Here is a "before" shot of the wheels. They are all pretty much just like this one so you get the idea. So far i have done both the passenger side ones. They have been re sprayed multiple times and had painted over rust so getting them in printable condition has been time consuming!

And here is what they look like after.

And thats pretty much where im at right now. Got some house projects coming up soon so this thing might not get much attention for a little bit, but i will be goofing around with it none the less.

Nice trade! I like what you did with the wheels and bumper. Made a BIG difference.

The rack would have been handy for hauling lumber, no?

Thanks! Cant wait to finish it up and pull it out of the garage for a look at over all package with the new bumper and cleaned up wheels! Think it should look considerably better! Also cant wait to get the new muffler on cause the current one is blown out.

Re: Doing a trade. Caddy for a pickup.

I liked the old Caddys, that one is in exceptional condition for its age. Upside is the truck will get better fuel economy as the 500 plant in the Coupe de Ville fetches 8 MPG on a good day with a tail wind.

The car was in way too good condition for this but, what would have been really cool would have been to put that Caddy 500 engine into the Chevy truck.

Yeah, those Caddy 500 engines were terrible on fuel. Some on the things that contributed to the bad fuel economy included very restrictive exhaust, lack of lock up torque converter and a camshaft with too much overlap. Don't know if they're still around but there used to be a company that sold a camshaft for this engine that was geared for fuel economy. It did as as claimed and made the engine into a low rpm toque monster.

I'll post more pics of the car. It was in pretty sad shape. It was a coast car so it had lots of rust.

Re: Doing a trade. Caddy for a pickup.

More pics of the caddy.

It was a cool car but needed way more work then i was willing to put into it. If it were about 10 years older i would have kept it! But a 76, not so much. Needed just about everything you could think of. Had it for sale on CL for about 3 months and never got more then a $500 dollar offer on it. So when this guy e mailed me saying he had a truck for sale i jumped on it!

It definitely looks like you really made out on the deal. Wonder what the new owner plans to to with the Caddy? D-Derby??

Re: Doing a trade. Caddy for a pickup.

The back fender skirts alone are worth close to $200, the upholstery is nice and could go for more. Especially the hood. It's worth more in parts to a collector. The rust isn't too bad according to the pix. Definitely not practical as a daily driver any more but being a luxury relic still holds some special interest value. It's worth what someone is willing to pay the most for it I guess, but I don't know how many of these are left that are mint...

My father in law- to be has the silver 76 Coupe de Ville. They still have some value in the lowriding community.

Re: Doing a trade. Caddy for a pickup.

Are my suspicions correct? Not much sun in Oregon means the dash pads in general are still in good shape? If so my wife is going to have to put up with many stops at pic n pulls in Oregon and Washington next summer.

Nice pickup by the way
Not all Caddi's got bad fuel mileage. I had an 82 base Coop Devil that came with a Buick V6 and a 700R4. That thing got 28 MPG every trip. We called it our Econo-couch. 5 hours of driving from Bakersfield to Sac and didn't get Numb-but

Re: Doing a trade. Caddy for a pickup.

About the dash's. Its kinda 50-50. Some of them are just toasted from sitting outside and (my theory) is that going from high moisture and back into direct sunlight can some times steam them apart. Otherwise, yea i guess they fair a little better then some other parts of the country.

Normally quoting pictures gets on my nerves, but this was posted a while back so I wanted to make sure you knew what I was asking/saying.

I see in this picture Heavy Duty Chassis, I'm not sure on '77 but on my '78 this was the heavy half/big 10 option. Basically gave you a 3/4 ton truck with 1/2 ton lug pattern. It was GM's way of getting around federal emission requirements (except cali of course) of the time since this pushed the GVW over the threashold. My '78 also has no smog equipment and never has. Could be someone just took the Big 10 stickers off your truck? I will check my SPID sometime (if I remember) and see what is has listed....

Just thought I would help with why it might not have the smog stuff.

every heavy half ive ever owned didnt have the big 10 stickers, and most if not all are original paint. Ive got quite a few 77-78 non emission trucks. I dont know if it was a dealer item or if only the 6200lb trucks got them, most of mine if i remember right are the 6050 trucks.

Re: Doing a trade. Caddy for a pickup.

I think there is the heavy duty chassis AND a big 10. I think they were close to the same thing but big 10 was more of a total package.
