Re: My powerplant is here!!!!

OK then,, I'm going to be the spoiler that makes all you bbc guys

If this were a sbc,, with a set of home ported factory heads (assuming or they would have a flow sheet I would think) with a pretty mild roller for the cubic inches, only 9.25:1 compression,,,,,, I'd not expect it to break 1HP per cube.

My guess is ya all are being a bit optimistic. I'm officially logging in at 430HP at around 6400.... and I HOPE you prove me wrong!!!

Re: My powerplant is here!!!!

And now that ya all are forming a lynch mob... I also think it's going to make 480+ pounds of torque is a DRIVABLE rpm range that is going to make it an ANIMAL on the street.

I just think it's going to be a bit air hungry up high to make the big HP numbers some of you are thinking. But again,, I hope i'm wrong.

No lynch mob forming but i am basing my build off of a Wheeler performance build which has a milder cam and 8.75:1 compression and it makes 480hp I called them and that's the cam they suggested and about 525 HP and 560 tq

Re: My powerplant is here!!!!

When you headed to the dyno? I'm really interested to see what she does. I don't know squat about big blocks other than to know they always surprise me.

I'm headed to the dyno in about a month or two. The shop owner is a very good friend of mine and I still need a few more parts. This is my first dance with a big block so I'm new at this too but so far I'm not disappointed. I'm just shopping smart and saving money where I can. I am anxious to hear this thing fired up and see what it does.

Re: My powerplant is here!!!!

Ok, here is what I have come up with...

454 .030" over with a lower friction piston design
Ported 049 heads since I don't have flow numbers for you ported 781's
Hyd 236/242 .521/.540 (I am using a 108 intake center line and 108 lobe sepperation. If you give me the actual ICL and LSA I can tell you more accurately)
1.7 rockers
750 non-vacum carb
RPM Air Gap
1 7/8 headers (guessed length to be 30", again if you measure them, I will give you more accurate info)
Low windage oil pan design

562ftlbs @ 4500 and 557hp@5750.. This is using an electric fan, electric waterpump and no accessories.

Now with a flex fan, mechanical water pump and powersteering it moves to 546ftls @ 4500 and 534hp @ 5750

Same fan, water pump and power steering, but production windage and a standard friction piston design, 531ftlbs @ 4500 and 513hp @ 5,750..

Does that help?

Re: My powerplant is here!!!!

Unfortunately I can not sellect a mechanical water pump with electric fan. So Here is the set up..

454 .030" over
Standard friction pistons and factory type windage
The ported 049 heads
Hyd 236/242 .521/.540 106icl 110lsa
1.7 rockers
750 non-vacum carb
RPM Air Gap
2" headers at 35" length
91 octane
Mechanical fan, mechanical water pump, powersteering

TQ 535ftlbs @ 4250-4,500 and 513hp @ 5500 (511hp @ 5750)

Same combo above but with electric fan, electric water pump and no accessories:
550ftlbs @ 4500 and 534hp from 5500-5750

Re: My powerplant is here!!!!

I'm not taking anything away from the guys running big blocks, and expecially ones that move. But, small blocks are nothing to look down upon either. I don't want to get in to ricer math, but my SBC's sure have competed well for their size against the bigger cubed motors.

Pump gas 347ci running 11.47 @ 118mph is nothing to sneeze at in one of these trucks. Heck, the majority of the big blocks on this sight don't run that with 100+ more cubic inches. Not saying they can't, DJ, Regan, BigJim and others are prime examples of what big blocks can do. Yes I know my 347 was more of a radical build, but I would expect that a somewhat tame big block should run that all day long.

Now as far as longevity.. My old motor ran strong for 5 years, had 75+ passes at the track, countless dyno pulls, 15,000 miles on it (and some of them were not easy miles). Today that motor is being run in a sand drag truck with a 200 hit. With no changes to it (except a carburated intake) he has placed 1st and 2nd in the two events he has run along side with some radical big blocks and small blocks. I expect that motor to go for a long time with little to no maintainence.

The new motor, for what it is (pump gas hyd roller), I think it will again be a competitor.

Re: My powerplant is here!!!!

The Ls stuff is worlds ahead of the older Small Blocks. I wouldn't be scared to build a nice motor on the Ls platform. If my son decides to make his truck into his daily driver It will probably get a warmed over 6.0 truck motor.
