Re: The 88 Crew Cab build

I can't wait to help this thing get back on the trails. It was a VERY capable rig in it's day. I'm sure you'll make it even better.

Let me know when it's time to swap the 4l80e in, minus the E. You'll love the OD in that thing!

Here are Pics of the new OD Trans ! Not new new ...but new to Me !!

Here is the kit I am installing. Transgo 4L80E-# Full Manual kit, I will not have to have a computer for this beast. It has the PTO out put on the side of the T-Case. 45,000 Miles is all it had when the truck cought fire !! I traded a set of SBC heads and crank rods and .030 pistons for it !! OH ! and a NP241C transfer case.

Re: The 88 Crew Cab build

Got the Transgo kit for the 4L80 lastnight, I have a friend that is going to help me install it.

I'll take pics as we go for the build thread. Starting the Crawler build thread as well so check that out !

The Dana 44 in the Crew is comming out and going into the Crawler, the reason for this is because the Borg Warner Transfer case I got with the 4L80 is drivers drop. The 10 bolt in the crawler is in good shape but the Dana is pretty much new minus the Gears. So I'll be throwing Pics areound as I go !!!

Re: The 88 Crew Cab build

You could solve that small dilemma by putting a 1991 2500 suburban np241 in and have passenger side drop

I thought about that, "not the spacific T-Case" but finding a pass side drop for it. But honestly I like the though of those die hard Chevy boys looking at my truck going ......... Wait Squares didn't have a drivers drop? WTF ?? My little way of being Different !

A Dana is a Dana in my world! Doesn't matter what it came from, only how you can make it work in your application.

Re: The 88 Crew Cab build

I agree, parts is parts. The challenge is finding what you want and make it fit/work.

I have always liked the crewcab duallys and will build one when the Dodgeit body falls apart around my 12 valve. I found a six full door in town that I would love to have. Wife put a squash on that quickly. Something about too many projects already...

Re: The 88 Crew Cab build

What a productive weekend !! Took the 4l80 over to 67_SS396 and he is going to install the transgo kit for me, pulled the 454 out of his short bed so he can get started on getting the other engine installed ! I started the tear down my Crew for the Diesel swap. I know I know it's not the allmighty CUMMINS !! but hey I am looking for good MPG and for the truck to still do it's truckly duties !! So .. A "J" code 6.2 with 17,000 original miles should do nicly !! on a 4L80 and 4:56 gears it will do what ever I need it too and get 20+ MPG doing it !

Re: The 88 Crew Cab build

Dang man, you do work quickly! My leg should be much better tomorrow so I can get the trans finished up for you! I want to have it back to you by wed night.

Keep up the great progress! Do you need me to bring by some of my spare parts you need? I know it can be tough running erands with only one vehicle. Plus, it would give me a chance to try driving a little more. I gotta get back up to speed as it looks like I'll have to drive the Dodge pulling Buster to Gilmer in a couple weeks.

Re: The 88 Crew Cab build

Just an update.

I got the 454 out and installed a few braces that I needed from when I converted it to 4x4, not remembering that a 3/4 ton R frame is taller than a 1/2 ton frame the brace I used was ot tall enough ! GRRR.... O'well I just happen to know some handy welders . This is the brace that holds the front sway bar onto the body of the truck. I then got the 6.2 installed and I now know that I'm going to have to knotch the brace I just put in so the harmonic ballancer pully will clear. 67_SS396 hooked me up with the fuel filter I needed and the air cleaner, as well as a few other things. THANK YOU !!

I'll get pics up asap,

Re: The 88 Crew Cab build

The pics keep getting away from me sorry.

So 67_SS396 get's half way through installing the Transgo kit for me and sends me a message that says " This kit is missing parts" ! So after 3 days of fighting with who is going to send me what's missing, the parts should arrive tomorrow. The 6.2 is in and I am just lacking a few little things to get it going.

This swap was not that bad, just a few .. Well I thought that would work's ! and I'm on to 20+MPG'S baby

Re: The 88 Crew Cab build

What a find my friends. I needed a starter for my 6.2, so I hopped on CL and found one and called the guy up. He gave me the time to be there and I proceeded to make my way up there. After arriving, I chatted with the old boy a few minutes and he showed me the starter and that it worked. He then preceedes to tell me he has a bunch of 6.5 turbo prats as well, I asked him what he had and the price for it? He asked me how much cash I brought with me, and I told him 80 bucks. He said and I quote " sounds good for whats back there in the shop".

We open the doors and there were a ton of parts. He told me to take what I needed !!
So here is what I got for 80 Bucks:

1. Turbo
2. Manifolds
3. Heads from the 6.5 "Complete"
4. Rocker arm covers
5. Rockers
6. Push rods
7. Alternator
8. Water pump
9. Front cover
10. Brackets for the serp kit thats on 6.5's
11. Starter

I have included a few picks of the score !

Let me know thoughts !

Re: The 88 Crew Cab build

I would say that's a good score. The turbo and manifolds are worth what you gave IMO. I still chuckle that you had all those parts in the trunk of that little car. . It won't be a speed demon, but should have enogh power to keep you happy for a while. The increase in mileage will make it all worthwhile buddy. Keep that in mind.

The trans would've gone quicker had they not put the wrong package of springs and plugs in the box.
