Re: General Maintence

with 3/8 tubbing as long as your not trying to do a 90 degree bend with your hand you shouldnt have too much trouble. take your time and use anything around the house to help you bend it. only one way to learn.

Yeah your 100% right, I guess that's the way I'll be doing it because I'm not shelling out $25 for a pre-bent line.

I went and bought the fuel line today and also a tubing bender, so tomorrow I will start to bend it to the shape I need. Thanks for all the help everyone.

A tubing bender is a good investment for you. Now you have it and can do your own brake lines too if needed. The flare tools are a bit more expensive but will fit nicely in your tool box next to your new bender.

Yeah I love getting new tools. I think I should have a flaring tools because my dad a couple of years ago bought line to do the brakes on our Camaro. I found the tool to cut brake line so I'm thinking somewhere in our garage there is a flaring tool kit. Might seem weird to some people that a 17 year old enjoys getting tools but oh well. I have inherited 3 tool boxes from my dad full of tools so I am happy with that, but I could always use more automotive tools. A blue Snap-on tool box with Mopar information/ specs on it. A smaller red toolbox on top of that, and last a small red toolbox on top of that. This is my current set-up, but I would like to get more automotive tools for myself to have/use.

Re: General Maintence

I started to bend the line today and that had me swearing worse than a sailor. I worked for 3 hours and barely got the the bottom end of the line shaped to fit the fuel pump end. Tomorrow I will hopefully finish were the line go's into the fuel pump, then I will start working on the top end of the line. Hopefully that will go a lot easier learned a lot of lessons about bender line. But I hope I will never have to replace another fuel line on this truck while the motor is in.

Re: General Maintence

Right now my budget does not allow me to get anything other than the basic needs of the truck. And I can't use my old fuel line or else I would but it is all tore up.

Re: General Maintence

So today I got nowhere with the fuel line, probably just going to buy a pre bent fuel line for the truck. But I did get everything else set up sprayed some starting fluid in the carb and the truck fired right up and ran perfect for the time it ran. Once I get the line done it should be running fine again.

Re: General Maintence

no pic but sounds about right
it can be real tricky getting the first bit started
push the fitting to the end of the line when pushing in
and i turn it backwards till it lines up,and the threads are going to line up easier

Re: General Maintence

So I went to go start my truck today and I noticed the started was being very sluggish I figured my battery was dead. So I popped the hood and started to remove the battery. As I was taking off the bolts on the terminals I got the negative off fine. But when I started to remove the positive I noticed a big problem. The terminal was melted, and when I go to take off the bolt off the terminal it just spins the terminal in place, so now I am stuck on what to do. Any help with this?

Re: General Maintence

Hi. If it's a side post battery I think your battery is ruined. I had one get so hot in the past that it melted/weakened the post inside the casing: when I tried to unscrew the cable, the post broke loose inside the battery & the whole schmeer turned.

BTW, if you haven't had any luck with a fuel line I can drop one in the mail to you on Monday for $5 plus postage. I have five or six fuel pump-to-quadrajet fuel lines that I've stripped off scrapyard vehicles.

It may have a little grease on it but it may save you some headache/expense. I hoard these things up since bending fuel lines is so difficult due to the multiple bends.

Just let me know.

Yeah that's exactly what happened, and I know the battery is ruined, but I can get then for $5-$10 new. Can you send me a PM.

Re: General Maintence

Well I got the melted battery out today using the best tool for fixing annoying problems, a hammer. My next step is to get another battery and hope it doesn't melt.

Re: General Maintence

I see from the pics, that you still have the stock carb. The bad news,is,that's a model E4ME,and they are the WORST carb to have! That white connector ,on the top,is the idle-mixture solenoid.GM had to replace several engines, and a few trucks, because the solenoids kept failing. When they fail, they dump HUGE amounts of fuel into the intake, causing damage from thinned oil,and in a few cases, engine fires. Mine went bad,in November,on my way home, and I used 3/8 of a tank of fuel(6 gallons),in 2 miles ! My Gmc parts truck had an early model, with a mechanical choke,so I swapped it,changed the oil,and the plugs, and its fine, now. Try to find one from thelate '70s-early '80s,WITHOUT the solenoid. It can save you a lot of grief! The rebuild kit,for that carb is $70,and the solenoid is $70-$80.

Yeah I was thinking about doing that. I like the Quadrajets but I don't like all the electronics on them.

Re: General Maintence

I have always chosen the q-jets,over thecarter, holley,or autolite, mainly because you can get a great balance between mileage and power. With the small primary ,and large secondary, you can balance the performance. Smaller jet/needle set in primary side, gives you the mpg,but if you play with the secondary needle size, and the opening rate, you can tune it for top-end as well.I get 18-19mpg,with mine,as a daily driver, but if I kick in the secondaries,....instant "sit-you-back-in-your-seat" POWER! I'm actually looking for a couple more,as spares. Good luck with yours, and give a shout,if you need anything.

Re: General Maintence

Later on,if you get the chance, try some Gabriel air shocks,on the rear.I use them on mine, and I like the way I can "tune the ride",with them. For a softer ride,I run 28psi,and if I pull my work trailer,or my 16 ft camper,I run 40,or 45psi.I'm currently trying to plan out a system to fill each one,at different psi,to help with leveling,if I have an uneven load. They run around $100-$150,but they're well worth it!
