Ignition Switch Question

I cut down the outer barrel of an old cigarette lighter, and rotated the light bulb housing 90 degrees. Didn't get a chance to hook it up to a 12v source yet. So I'll see if it works when I finish getting my truck wired up.

Hey there folks -

Sorry to dredge this one yet again, but I stumbled on the thread looking for info on my own ignition switch woes. The info here has already been helpful, as luckily, I appear to have one of these aftermarket switches already...oh goody!

The issue is that my connector...the molded plastic plug w/ cavities for the series 56 terminals...has seen better days. At some point under the PO, a couple of the cavities melted due to excessive heat/amperage. As I'm replacing the harness in my '65 at this point, I'd love to replace this piece, along with a few other older connectors. I've found most everything I need, minus this ignition connector. Search the 'nets as I might, it seems this piece has not made it into anyone's repro/repop inventory.

Has anyone ever come across a source, other than scouring the boneyards?

Eviljim,
I've not been able to find any stock type ignition connectors in the aftermarket either. Always had to find originals in good shape and use those.
I'd be interested to find these too.

I just revisited this thread. Thank you for the pics of the Impala switch. My 61 has this exact switch and I knew it wasn't the original from some of the other guys on here.

Well my Ignition switch problem has been solved. I now have true power on in the accessory position. I tried the 61-63 impala switch - no accessory with power so don't order that one and expect it to give you power in the acc posit.

What solved the issue for me was a 67-72 C10 switch. It comes with an active acc position that will provide power when in that position. You wont be frying points or running electric pumps while listening to the radio and the engine not running. Be advised while the switch fits the 64-66 dash, the depth needs a tad adjustment. I used a very thin washer and I was good to go. you can actually modify the thin nut ring that comes with the switch and it will give you the desired depth in your dash.

A couple other things you need to be aware of, you will need to purchase a 67-72 lock cylinder with the key. Your 64-66 cylinder will not fit. You will also have to modify your wiring harness as the new switch isn't like the one you are replacing. As my truck is running an LS now the points aren't an issue but I wanted accessory power and the minor adjustments i had to make were well worth it! Hope this helps anyone else trying to get accessory power in their first gen C10.

The OP here, I thought that the 67-72 switch may be a good solution, but then you get into different keys for doors and ignition.

A while back I bought the AAW classic update harness for my build.
I haven't actually looked at the ignition switch but it shows an accessory position and circuit in the schematics. Expect to be working on my wiring soon, will advise further.

Not a big deal regarding the keys in my case. I have installed a keypad on the door and have electronic locks. My altman latches showed up today and I am installing them now. Will let you all know how it goes....instructions are a bit vague in some areas.

I had a look at the ignition switch in my AAW wiring harness kit. It seems to have accessory position to the left, then lock, off, on, and the spring start. Reading a couple of posts above before this post, I realize that I didn't confirm that the kit includes the wiring connector. I am 99.9 percent sure that it does, but I will double check and advise.

I guess the point here is that American Auto Wire appears to sell both the switch and the connector. If so, I imagine that they would sell them separately.

The classic update harness does come with the ignition switch, and the connector is built into the harness.

I went on their site and sent them a message to see if they sell them separately, I will post up their reply for all.
