Re: New ZZ4 coming have questions?

I dig those aluminum valve covers. Even though they are centerbolts... they still look period correct for an older rig. Nice!

Also... if you do go with the MSD Atomic FI, I'd definately like to know how you like it. I've been pondering that FI setup for a '70 GMC 2500 project.

The covers are really nice quality, but I hate the center bolts that they provided. Ordered some from ARP, but they are too short.

I used the aluminum spacer/adpater on my other ZZ4 and bolted on some early 70's corvette covers, but they are a ***** to get sealed, so I decided to just go with center bolts this time.

Still kicking the injection thing around. This engine/trans is starting to get expensive. I'll soon have more in it that I do the truck.

I only paid $850 bucks for my truck ('72 GMC 1500), and I exceeded that amount on the engine rebuild.

Re: New ZZ4 coming have questions?

I love my zz4...However, I loved it even more when I installed Edelbrock Pro-flo fuel injection on it. Idle purrs like a kitten in the winter, instant throttle response, increased fuel mileage, no smelly gas fumes, and last but not least more power.

I wanted the serpentine belt and all the fancy billets bolt on, but after messing with fuel injection during my racing days. I knew fuel injection was the way to go for me. I managed to find it on craigslist for about $700. I see them for sale on craigslist every once in a while. People either buy them and get scared about installing them or what ever reason they have. All I know is that I see them for sale ever couple of months for cheap. You can get custom tunes for zz4 via a chip for 70 bucks from Edelbrock. If you need help just msg me one day if you decided on one.

In fact there is one for sale right now on craigslist where I live, he is asking 1600 but I know I can get them cheaper because there is NO DEMAND for it. People get overwhelmed by all the wirings, changing intake manifold, and modifying the distributor for the trigger .

Re: New ZZ4 coming have questions?

By the way, make sure when you get the headers for the zz4 that it has a D-shape to match the heads on the zz4. I bought Hedman, forgot the part number but search.

Re: New ZZ4 coming have questions?

Nice serpentine setup. What is it off of? I am kicking around the idea of getting a 96-00 crate engine, but the stock serpentine setup for those engine puts the AC compressor on the wrong side (drivers side). Not quite sure the vortec heads have the right bolt holes for for an earlier serpentine setup. Do the heads on the ZZ4 have similar accessory bolt holes as the vortec heads?

Re: New ZZ4 coming have questions?

The gen before, the acc drive will fit it as well so it is a direct swap over . Just remove and reinstall then you can have the alt and compressor on the correct sides

Jet, I purchased the engine carb to pan with the serpentine from GM. It included a reverse flow water pump, alternator, A/C compressor and all of the aluminum castings. It also included a Holley carb, distributor, starter, plug wires, etc. All I need to add is the fan, motor mounts, and headers. It's really complete and I think worth the extra $'s vs. piecing it all together.

Still debating to stay old school carb or fuel injection........but.....I'm leaning FI, so I may just have a brand new Holley for sale.

Hopefully I'll get the aluminum pan on this weekend.

Re: New ZZ4 coming have questions?

Made some more progress. Headers, aluminum pan, and starter installed.

Motor mounts in transit, need to source a TV cable, and shorten my drive shaft. Hopefully I'll get the old engine/trans out in the next couple of weeks and then spend some time cleaning the engine compartment. Goal is to have this installed and running by tax time.

Re: New ZZ4 coming have questions?

Well, I finally pulled the engine and trans out of the 72. Turns out it was a tired 400 small block, and the block was cast in Jan of 70. Now I need to spend the weekend cleaning the frame, cross member etc, and do a little painting.

I decided to upgrade the radiator and with an aluminum 2 core and it arrived today. Motor mounts are on the way, so hopefully I'll start to install, the new engine & trans next weekend. Here's a couple of pics from this past week.

Re: New ZZ4 coming have questions?

One other thing about the zz4 - it's a noisy motor, lots of valve noise.

I have one in my 69 Camaro and love it. If you get the exhaust loud enough....you don't notice the engine so much.
