New ZZ4 coming have questions?

I finally had enough of the smoke and the leaks of what is suppose to be a 400 sb in my 72 GMC and I've got a turn key ZZ4 on a truck somewhere between Nebraska and West Texas. Now I have a couple of questions:

1. What shorty headers fit these trucks, (brand part #)
2. What fittings will I need to attach my old power steering lines to the new metric power steering pump?
3. What issues will I encounter when I switch from a TH350 to a TH700R4?
4. What else am I missing?

Re: New ZZ4 coming have questions?

Just about any header should fit it as long as they are compatable with the vortec head, try to get some with the thickest flanges you can find. Lee manufactureing is the ones that makes the metric to older style fittings. And the the last on the list is you will need a T.V. cable to hook up to thew carb from the 700R4 to adjust line pressure it is of the upmost of importance that it be adjusted properly or the trans will not last. Enjoy your newfoud power! .Jim

Re: New ZZ4 coming have questions?

For starters you are going to love that motor. I have one in my 65 nova coupe and its a runner. When you can get the hot cam& ratio rockers Chevy offers (really wakes the motor up. I run Sanderson headers on mine, thick flanges(never leak) mid block type (block hungers) no starter issues at all. Run a mini starter if you can. I run mine with a 350 trans so can't help there. I just know you are in for a treat my friend, enjoy! Cheers, Pat

Pat, thanks for the advise on the headers. There is a reason I choose the ZZ4, I've had one installed in my 69 Camaro for about 7 years now. Night and day difference between it and the old L48 350. The engine has been flawless. I even get 17mpg running it in front of a M20 4 speed and 3:31 rear. I'm hoping the 700R will out perform the TH350 with better MPG.

Jim, thanks for the TV reminder and the Lee info.

Re: New ZZ4 coming have questions?

You can also screw out the pressure regulator out of the back of the power steering pump and put it into your new pump ending the need for the adaptor for the lines. I had some Sanderson headers on a V-8 S-10 that were a little hard to work with but it may have been the fact that it was a V-8 in an S-10 not the makers of the header. In their defense I will say the flange was nice and thick and it was a very well built header.

Re: New ZZ4 coming have questions?

yes the sanderson headers is the way to go !!! i put a zz4 in my 65 carryall w/400 turbo ! only 1 problem- may i recommend some kind of locking nut on the collectors and always use the copper gasketson the collectors and carry spares ! seems like anything but a lock-nut of high quality will vibrate loose on them collector bolts !!

No problem...As one of the other members posted, The G.M hot cam kit with 1.6 roller rockers really wakes these engines up. Its like a 50 H.P gain.

Good luck with your new engine transplant. Geary

Re: New ZZ4 coming have questions?

Look what I picked up yesterday and unpacked this afternoon. Now the fun starts. Paint block, install, starter, serpentine, A/C, Alternator, valve covers.

Now I'm toying with a MSD Atomic FI system?

Re: New ZZ4 coming have questions?

I had the ZZ4 in a 84 short bed. That truck ran awesome with it. Also had it hooked to a 700R4 from Phoenix transmission. I remember I had to get a hi torque starter for it too. Like someone said before make sure you adjust TV cable correctly also.

700r4 is what I'm planning on using. However, a Tremec T56 5 speed would be nice?

Yeah a 5 speed would be nice. I always wanted a 6 spd from a camaro. Just wasn't sure how much work it would be. It would be fun to row the gears with that ZZ4! Also I think you may have to shorten drive shaft since 700r4 is a little longer

Friesen Chevrolet in Sutton, NE. They were actually a couple hundred less than the big guys and free freight.

Could have bought it closer but avoided sales tax using an out of state supplier. Which would have been about $400.

I think they had a couple more in stock.

Re: New ZZ4 coming have questions?

I have the ZZ4 with the Tremec 5 speed - I love it! I am going to change the gears to 4:11's, though, I have 3.73's right now and in 5th I'm around 2000 rpm at 80 mph.

Finally got to work on the engine today. Serpentine system on and valve covers. Aluminum pan is next. That's "Hank" in the back ground, my buddy's 58. Re: New ZZ4 coming have questions?

I just ordered a GM certified 700r4 for a 90 Corvette Friday, so things are coming along. Still trying to decide if I'm going Fuel Injection or use the Holley.
