Re: Has anyone painted inside their cab themselves?

Since I wanted my truck gloss black inside an out, when it was apart I sprayed the entire cab inside and out with black lacquer on the same day. The outside has since been repainted, but the inside remains as originally sprayed. The only decent shots I have are on VHS tapes. Here are some poor quality snapshots -

I'm not sure when Chevrolet started using fawn, I know 60-61 was silver. The paint code I used is '03 Nissan Sunlit Sand, code EVO.

Re: Has anyone painted inside their cab themselves?

Man I want to try a two tone using white but I can't pull the trigger on it - afraid it will always look dirty... looks great in your truck however - so maybe it's still on the list of possibilities

Re: Has anyone painted inside their cab themselves?

Its almost a flat finish. I think its factory, but dont really know. In that pic it had been over a year since I cleaned the inside. I dont know how to read the vin to tell what the color was.

Re: Has anyone painted inside their cab themselves?

Mine was actually in pretty decent shape on the dash etc, but the door lowers needed to be re-done. It took 3 tries to get the color and level of metallic right, since as far as I know my interior isn't a stock shade. First pic is the painted/blended door lower (everything under the door card was painted)...ignore all the white crap, its just a little calcified water from wet sanding later.
Second pic is with the door panels on....no one has said they've seen a difference in person. This was also my first full paintjob, and with the exterior being a color change, it was a tightrope dance between keeping good inside paint, and blending the new stuff in. (just realized it was different sides in the pic, but the same was done to both)

I painted mine last spring. What a pain, but I'm glad that part is done.

I guess I'm crossed up with earlier paint colors, did GMC have a dull silver interior?

Re: Has anyone painted inside their cab themselves?

was custom cabs different? my 61 is more like my 57 and 58 i had. it really looks like primer that is not completely flat. they sure didn't splurge on nice paint inside my base truck.

Re: Has anyone painted inside their cab themselves?

can anybody recommend a good single stage paint to use on the interior? My '64 interior is the lighter shade of fawn and I'd like to keep it that color since I'm just going to spray the dash and floor. everything else is in good shape.

or will it be impossible to get a close enough match?

If you want it gloss then a single stage metallic will work fine. If you want the factory stain sheen, adding matting agent to a single stage metallic will cloud it and make it look somewhat milky. I used basecoat thinned 50%, then added 15% hardener for some durability and sheen without the cloudiness of flattened single stage.

Thanks for the info Astro. That sounds like a great plan. Any chance you have the paint code handy?

I used '03 Nissan Sunlit Sand, code "EVO" but if you have a paint shop nearby that has a scanner they can match your existing paint pretty much exactly.

Everything was the same, just different cameras and lighting. I did spray the column, steering wheel, and arm rest base with gloss clear.

Re: Has anyone painted inside their cab themselves?

astronaut,
off topic but what knob did you use for the thrift air? Did you just add some epoxy in the hole or use a set screw type knob? The only setscrew knobs I've found are for the wiper and they have a hole in the middle (for washer).

thanks.

I think it was a drilled out radio knob with a set screw, LMC had them.
