I respectfully disagree with the cutting two round method. There is a pic somewhere here of you and your buddys trucks side by side and yall are both sporting negative camber. What your doing is saving $250 not buying spindles and burning up $200 worth of steer tires.

I respectfully disagree with JKnight. An alignment shop is the first stop after cutting coils; they will correct caster, camber and toe.

Re: What is the best method to drop my truck?

I've done seven or eight trucks in my career with cut front coils and relocated rear spring hangers. Total cost was about $1.98 (for grade 8 bolts) plus an alignment.

Blue truck was probably 4/6; red truck is roughly 3/3. The red truck pictured has been a daily driver for 26 years and 200,000 miles with no issues.

Re: What is the best method to drop my truck?

Keith, I dont think Jknight is talking about cutting coils in general. I believe he is referring to cutting 2 to 2.5 coils. You guys know I am advocat of cut coils as long as its done correctly. Cutting more than 1 to 1.5 max exceeds those boundaries in my mind.

Re: What is the best method to drop my truck?

Im not saying it cant be done Keith, I just think its way more trouble than its worth. Longer alignment bolts hardly stay tight, the splined hole is cupped, and shims ocationally fall out. Ive been that route before too and hated it and every alignment guy my friends and I went to was pissed because of having to use a back up on the alignment bolts and had to reset the spring in the pocket everytime they lifted the truck. Its just the way it was back then.
Here is a pic back in 86.
PS disregaud the overdressed couple..its the only pic I can find of it. LOL

Correct Ken, I was reffering to cutting 2 rounds.

It rides great. and im not sure about the coil question i'll find out once i get to working back on it. i was just planning to cut one coil at a time to see when it levels out

with 2 coils cut you will have to run longer bolts and a spacer to get back your alignment

i did the negative camber by choice. i also shimmed the front of the UCA fo move the upper ball joint aft for more positive caster. and i toed the wheels out. i have plenty of room to correct the negative camber

Re: What is the best method to drop my truck?

I don't like spindles on squares because the coil bucket drags before the pivot. Eventually the coil pushes thru. But I've only dropped 5 or 6 of them.

Weird.... I've dropped a similar quantity & never had issues w/the 'bucket' dragging to the point of the coil possibly pushing through when using dropped spindles (2.5 & 3" versions). The lower control arm pivots (bushings) take a beating sometimes but that's the nature of their location since they're the lowest part of the front suspension.

This is the Max I would ever recommend. My personal experience was 1 coil is just right, and 1.5 was too much.

Regardless, your best bet is to start any drop with lowered spindles. This will not have a negative impact on your ride, and you can use replacement or cut springs to go lower is you prefer.

Ha I was 17 couldn't afford drop spindles. My buddy had them and they pushed thru but we may have tested the limits of the truck.

Re: What is the best method to drop my truck?

So I think I want some drop spindles and coils for fro.t and a flip for the rear now what parts should I get. I want good quality, good ride but a good affordable price not looking to break the bank. Let's keep in mind I want a 4/6 drop.

Re: What is the best method to drop my truck?

check the thickness of your rotors before you order your spindles. it will be 1" or 1 1/4". belltech and classic performance are popular drop spindles. i went with a western chassis flip kit, stong, fits well, inexpencive and came with new u-bolts. all can be found on summit

I've been thinking about trying to get some HD coils at a scrapyard. Does it matter if they are pulled off a 2wd or 4wd HD?

And, when you cut 2 coils on the HD's, it's about 4 inches drop, right?

Thanks.

Yah - it kinda does, since 2wd are coils and 4wd are leafs...

You have "toe out"?

That should result in dartiness and poor on-center feel.

The goal is zero toe (or slight toe in) at speed, which is typically 1/8" - 1/4" toe statically.
