Aftermarket Underbed Fuel Tank Filler Neck/Cap Options

Heres a picture showing how close tank and filler are.You can see theres not much space to work with.

Gee Starterman, good picture! I'm kind of wondering how one gets the hole to fit the filler neck as your pic shows! I was thinking to buy a 1x4x however long to make a template? It'll be a while before I do this, but your pic really helps!

LOwrodderchev, I sure would like to see how you adapted that mustang tank neck to the filler neck, I'm using the mustang tank too. It comes up on a bit of an angle, did you just join the two with a piece of hose ?

This question is for Starterman99........... what are you using for a gas tank vent? (tubing size, fittings, etc?) I am looking at my options on what to do for my tank vent. Thanks!

I have the same type set-up, I used a length of 3/8 fuel line with a breather from a differential, tied up along the frame so it is as high as possible.

I basicly did the same as was just stated.3/8 fuel hose ran from top of tank over top of frame and secured to fender bolt.

I think a cork from a biiiigg wine bottle would work. but first you have to drink the wine

hardware stores will have the hole saw s from 3/4" to 6" DIA. thesize you need will work on a 1/4" or 3/8" drill

I'm just beginning to think about a tank for my '57.

Here's some photos from a guy on the trifive.com site and it's really nice. I think I might go the same route as him.
This poly tank is from Tanks, Inc and it has an option for a fuel injection pump setup which I will need.

It looks like the setup that I showed in my previous post is not going to work.

Would you do me a big favor and measure the height of that tank. Both in the rear where it's stepped down and in the front? I'm am having trouble finding those measurements anywhere online.

Also, I think I found that that rectangle dimensions at the bottom are 28" X 17 3/4". Is that correct?

I want to make sure it would fit my '57 " longbed ("89). The rearward crossmember in my truck is different than yours. I'd also like to see exactly how low this hangs down too.

I would sure appreciate the info.

It has a few disadvantages over yours in that it's smaller (15 gal) and more expensive. But, it's not going to hang down as low and it has a side-fill option. How much less it hangs down I can determine when you verify those measurements for me. Since this is going to be a daily driver and a work-truck for us, I like the side-fill idea.

Here's a photo I took yesterday of my frame. You can see that reward crossmember is different and it has the corner gussets.

Plus the overload spring stops are in the way. Will you be using these rear leaf springs? Brothers is always having sales. Don't buy until you're sure. Looks like you have time to think about it

Yes, I was planning on using them. We might very well be loading this truck up once in a while.

I looked at those spring stops and I think they would be pretty simple to modify so they're out of the way. I don't mind doing that but I really don't want to start messing with the crossmember.

I made my tank and my filler is just below the top of the wood. I will be using a gas door similar to the ones Denee007 is thinking about using.

Did you take out a crossmember to do that tank?
You can see in photo that I have a crossmember that would prevent me from using a tank like that without removing it.

Roger, I tried scanning the dimensions of the tank and sending them to the computer~ not going to happen; so

Follow me:
Top of the gas tank, running lengthwise of the truck: 11 7/8"
The step down or drop; goes down below the rear crossmember: 3 1/2"
The remainder of the back part of the tank that goes beneath the crossmember: 6"
The depth of the tank: 10 3/4"
The part you would see from behind the truck as the bumper would hide: 7 3/4"

Just had a talk with my wife and we went out and looked at the truck. (This truck is hers so I make the presentations and she makes the decisions.)

I set a tape measure on the crossmember to show her how low each tank would hang down. (Yours hangs 1 3/4" lower than that Kustom's tank does.) Also, the bumper on our truck is narrow and doesn't cover it that well. So, she likes the idea of the Kustom tank better in that regard.

But, the kicker for her was the side fill option. She wants to be able to fill the tank if the bed is loaded with whatever since we are going to use it for hauling things. She didn't mind the idea of the smaller tank and having to fill a little more often either.

So, it looks like the Kustom tank is the one at this point.

Yes roger55 I did remove my rear cross member for two reasons. One I gained a few more gallons and it also brings the filler closer to the tailgate for easier filling.

Yes, Denee007 I manage a welding shop with a sheer and brake.

I could move my crossmember back about 7 inches and fit in the tank I was looking at earlier. This would save me over $200 over the Kustom aluminum tank I am looking at.

I was figuring that the engineers who designed the frame put that crossmember right where the spring bracket mounts for stress and strain. Do you think it that might be a concern in moving it back?

They most likely did that by design. My truck will never haul anything heavy.
