I just put one of those in my truck with a sm-465 and I love it. definitely did not need a cam and the power brakes work great now. Also I didn't want to void the warranty instantly.
I was spinning tires in 3rd gear by accident yesterday. The road was slightly wet

This reminded me of an article I was just reading in Street Rodder. Jeff Smith took a crate 350/290 hp and tweaked it a bit to twist out 334 hp. While the base engine isn't the same as the one you bought it does show how with a little work it can be made to produce more hp and torque over what it was delivered with, once you have passed the warranty period of course.
An Edelbrock top end package might be something you'd want to consider when the time comes.
Making power with the old school small blocks. Yeah.

X2. A mere set of bone stock Vortec heads alone on the 290HP would put it way up there.

I ran a desktop dyno simulation on that and with that only change, it has potential of 346HP @ 5,000, 393TQ @ 4,000.

That's with small tube headers, mufflers, dual plane intake, 750CFM carb (typical quadrajet), stock rocker arms, ILC 110.

This program assumes all tuning spot on and no pre-ignition. A benchmark for sure, but I'm thinking one could come close.

Same engine with stock Vortec heads, 214-224-112 cam on 108 ILC: 362HP @ 5,500, 398TQ @ 4,000. New school cam, very cheap grind from Summit (Elgin I believe).

You could do that with the 190/260HP engine. Cam and heads, 100HP gain. We are talking a 1,400$ engine, 75$ cam, 900$ or less for a set of assembled heads....

2500$ and some gaskets for a 360HP small block including the engine. Awesome.

Even cheaper for you, just get these bare heads and slap YOUR valves, YOUR springs in them use YOUR lifters...

And maybe a set of rockers. Not sure if the crate engine has the guided rockers, but my 88 firebird came with them even though it had pushrod guides in the heads. And those rockers are a dime a dozen at the U-Pull-It.
