Put a cam in Brand New 190hp Crate?
I got a brand new GM Crate engine in August when Jegs had a sale on ebay for $1265.00 delivered. It is a 190 hp engine(10067353). The engine is advertised as 190 hp but capable of 260hp. Is the 260 hp obtainable with ana,uminum intake, carb and headers? Should I put a different cam in before install? I'm not trying to build a monster that I know will need much more than I am starting with but I am planning on AC and running down the highway at 75. Any thoughts?

I just ordered one too - and I have an "RV" cam that I thought of putting in it. Don't know if it is the right thing to do as it will void the warrantee. I suspect I will leave it as is and enjoy it. Like you, I would like to see the opinions of others on this. Mine should arrive this week.

I put a new crate LS-2 in my 67 Chevelle 2 years ago. Not putting a cam in it was the biggest regret I had. Ran great. Awesome power. But no rumpity rump. Finally put one in a couple months ago. LOVE IT>
Sure would have been easier (by a bunch) to do it while it was easy, but no, I couldn't bring myself to pop open a NEW Motor. Do It.

New member here and I've been reading a lot about this lately. I can't find the article now but there is a link on this board somewhere.
This motor, with headers, performance muffler, a mild cam, performer intake and a 4 barrel put out close to 300 hp. I've just decided to buy the same motor put a comp cam xe262 or xe268, performer intake, qjet 4 barrel, and keep the stock headers with some flow masters. Good enough for me |

You guys are nuts. Buy a brand new motor with a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty and immediately void the warranty!?
My buddy had a crate motor in his Typhoon that let loose and GM replaced it with a brand new one INCLUDING LABOR and the oil cooler and front differential that it took out when it broke at ZERO cost to him. After the 3 year or 36,000 miles, knock yourself out. But until then, heck no!

Sounds like the stock engine with a few add ons will do fine |

My understand is you dont get that warranty unless Chevy puts it in. If you put it in its one year. I may be wrong though.

I can always pull the engine and do something more radical in my spare time down the road or pull this one and build it down the road.

Each motor is different as to the application it is for, but GM does NOT have to do the work. My buddy installed his motor himself. And GM did the work the second time.

A new 190 hp 4-bolt motor aint no slouch...You top that motor with an Edelbrock Performer intake, a set of headers, and a dialed in 4bbl, and it will melt tires if thats what your looking for...Matched up with a sound transmission and rear end, it will do whatever you want it to do. By old school standards, it's the best dollar per horse power motor out there...Many of these motors come delivered without break-in procedure paperwork. It is critical to follow the break-in procedures as well as using the correct oil, priming, etc. When you get yours installed and ready to fire, ask and I or another board member will post the procedure link.

That being said, I'd at least put in the steel shim head gaskets, mild port job, stainless steel back-cut 1.6" exhaust valves (or get the 1.5's back cut), and a mild cam. Too easy to do before installation, no new lifters or springs needed. I'd also put on a fel-pro 1 pc pan gasket and a composite timing cover gasket. Once you crack into that virgin it's yours and it negates the purpose for buying a crate motor, in my book. if they truly are better because they are factory spec brand new, you just killed that installing a cam. I can built a 300 hp small block for what that crate costs. I can rebuilt an engine as well as I can install a cam.

But for the guy who has some skills, not many tools/equip (can install an engine but not comfortable doing a complete rebuild of the bottom end), and is installing it himself, and wants more performance, and does not want a crappy rebuilt bottom end, I say do some cam/top end mods. For you and I, however, we would likely never buy a crate engine. We are likely skilled enough to build a better engine cheaper. Different strokes for different folks. I was pleased to see the 350/300HP engine that I didn't know existed. A very reasonable alternative not double-priced. A basic 350 but it has a cam that is very popular to install in the base 350 already there and warrantied. |
