I had the same problem with my old cluster. The needle is on the discharge side when the truck is running, but I have 14+ volts at the alternator and the battery.

Thanks,
Mark
Hi Mark,

Are you running the stock wiring for the gauge cluster? What you describing sounds like the #1 and #12 terminals on the cluster connector are reversed.

This is pretty straight forward. One wire comes from the junction block (battery side) and goes directly to the cluster. The other wire goes from the voltage regulator (alt side) and directly to the cluster. One wire is black and the other is black with a white stripe. I believe 20 gauge.

Are you still running the stock external regulator? If not, get with VetVette and see if he can help you with the wiring for the amp gauge. I am sure it does not work the same if you have an internal regulator alternator.

Funny it is 14 on both sides. That should make the needle neutral (middle) of the scale.

I can send you another amp gauge if you need it but it sounds like a simple wiring problem.

Hope this helps.

Take care,
Tom

Re: Classic gauge and cluster going out of business

I am running the stock wiring with an external voltage regulator. I replaced the fuse box/under dash harness with one that had not been hacked up previously but I did not alter it. I will check those two wires and see if they somehow got reversed. Thanks for the info. Are you still working for Meritor?

Thanks,
Mark

Hey Mark,

Other than a possible bad amp gauge, I would not know what to tell you. When the truck is running, what would happen if you took power off of one side (pull the fuse holder apart) and see what changes. They only way I know to test the amp gauge is to up plug the connector at the alternator and watch the gauge. It will take a while to move but should show a discharge.

My best advise is to contact VetVette and see what he can advise.

No on the Meritor. I have not been there for a year now. I am living with my wife in Junction City OR working for (DLTruck1973) selling parts.

Let me know how this works out.

Take care,
Tom

Re: Classic gauge and cluster going out of business

I am sorry to hear this Tom but I certainly understand... with work, wife, Family and other interest it is hard to do things as time consuming as what you do with these...

I was just restoring the Bezels and after doing the cost analysis on it, it just wasn't worth it... and the issues with people in dealing with it REALLY made it not worth it LOL...

Good luck to you and Heather... Let me know if there is ever anything I can do for you...

I will be always be around here trolling and looking for a place to add my 2 cents as usual. All of my customers have been great to deal with and love there personal stories. It is really nice to see your work in the finished product (truck).

Maybe I will come back later when the over head is lower. I still love doing quality work for people at a fair price.

Take care,
Tom

Hi Ralph,

I do not have anything for your conversion but I believe you can use your 8 cyl tach and have your computer programmed to read the 8 cyl tach as if it were a 4 cylinder. You may consider contacting ls1nova. He has done these conversions and knows how to make the stock tach work.

Take care,
Tom

This is a bad blow. I had hoped to buy from you next summer when my truck was ready for a new dash cluster.

Greg,

Get with me next summer and I maybe able to help you out with your cluster build. My situation will likely be a little different than it is currently.

Take care,
Tom

I sent an email to the first of the email addresses provided, it is more detailed as to my needs.

I intend to go to an internally regulated alternator next summer, I forgot to mention that in the email.

Hey Tom,

Disappointing news for my two upcoming projects! But you have to take care of you and yours as first priority. Best of luck to you and your future, it certainly won't be easy to replace someone who does such quality work!

If he doesn't respond, you might try his email address, it's in post #1 of this thread.
