Re: Does anyone remember that Chevy commercial?

My son is between churches right now [he is a youth/childrens minister]and is working with me at my shop in witch dad works everyday. He came to my shop to see what I was doing and never left since he was retired he couldn't stand not doing something. It is something real special to have both my dad [86] and my son[25] with me at my shop. Not always harmonious mind you but none the less still special. Jim

I remember when I was a kid, and I helped my dad saw out the alternator...

Yep, he got that little "Fisher Price" tool set for his birthday and thinks he is a "real mechanic" now. (Actually, he probably already knows more than a lot of the people who call themselves mechanics)

I love that pic! Your son with the plastic saw, I commented about him "helping you" once before. So sweet.

I hit a black bear with my Honda Accord last night and although I drove my car home, I fear the insurance will total out my beloved 2002 Accord. If I don't fix it I will get one exactly like it, even the same year, except the replacement will be a manual.

If something bad happened to my truck and I couldn't fix it, I'd get another step side, from '67 to '72 but a long wheel base. If it didn't have the spare tire mount, I'd make my own.

Re: Does anyone remember that Chevy commercial?

My daughter, our youngest, is likely more into it than the boys, but since I had this picture handy, start them young! This is my initial teardown - I let them take apart anything they couldn't hurt, really. You don't want an iron head falling on your feet, so leave one bolt in :-)

As a kid I spent a lot of time just "watching" my Dad, and my kids are less eager, as there are more interesting things to do these days. We only had 2 TV channels and computers weren't around, so watching Dad was relatively entertaining... not so much these days.

Still, not much beats rotating the crank with a wrench and actually -seeing- how the motor really works.

That learning process never ends - I hang around a local classic auto restoration/build shop, watch them, and ask a lot of questions. I've learned a ton that way. In fact I try to learn one new thing a day - I'm sure it averages out at least to that.

[Edit: That's how long it took me to do my truck - in the three years since I started the kid on the left is now an All-County high school offensive lineman!]
