Re: 1969 New Addition
Yes I too was afraid.
I did lots of contemplation and homework. That led me to lots of preparation. Painting is like everything else you do in life. In order to be successful you need to understand your opponent. When performing a task where many variables can affect your outcome, it is wise to recognize potential problems and eliminate all known problematic variables before beginning. I found some very excellent youtube video's on auto body and painting. I studied everyday and worked on things I knew how to do while seeking answers for things I didn't know how to do. The most intimidating thing of all was spraying the clear. Setting the HVLP gun up with full fan spray, fluid turned out 4 full turns, reduced clear coat and held the gun 2 inches from surface and spray with a 75% overlap!! I had watched a demonstration on spraying clear and that was supposed to be optimum. Obviously if you stand back 5 inches you feel more in control but will not achieve the finish you are looking for. Anyway I tried it right away and felt like a pro in a few seconds. It looks mirror. Yes there is some dust and a couple of sags but boy it looks nice. Dealing logically with problems that arise is more easily accomplished once the known variables are eliminated out of the equation. I have a flexible supply air hose and those thick orange ones. Obviously the flexible one is much easier to maneuver while painting. I started the clear inside the cab on the floor and behind the gas tank where no one would know if it was less than perfect. As mentioned I learned in seconds how to lay it down. After achieving desired results on the inside of the cab I proceeded to move around the passenger side behind the cab and don't you know for some reason, boom, spatter, spatter, blob, blob. My heart sank. The air hose probably got kinked around the front tire. So I was faced with a terrible spattered looking clear just under the rear window on the passenger side. What should I do? I don't know. I am an amateur. The clear has a pot life of 2 hours or less. I need to fix this. I thought I will just wipe off the clear so I got some reducer and wiped it. That was a big mistake! My green base smeared off and I wiped some of my green onto the white. Talk about an emotional roller coaster. So I decided I would not clear the back of the cab and deal with that problem later. I do have the bed to paint later. I proceeded to clear the rest of the painted surfaces. That only took a little while. Then I went back to the problem area. I took a piece of 600 and lightly sanded both the green and the white. I emptied the gun of clear and lightly taped off the white. I changed the settings on the gun so I had a very small spray pattern and appropriate fluid. I put a couple of coats of green on and then emptied the gun, cleaned it put a few drops of white in the gun, and did the same on the white. I also took that 1000 watt light and put it close to the area to force the base to dry. A few minutes later I was back to a beautiful finish. I hope my story didn't bore you. Re: 1969 New Addition
Thank you everyone!
It does look very nice! Hardly any orange peel. Only a couple of sags/runs. Minor dirt specks. I plan to cut and buff next week. I am very pleased. This is only the third vehicle I have ever painted and the first in 30 years. I was concerned because many people on the internet say/think that Omni is bad paint and does not cover well especially the green. I read that after I had already purchased the paint. I am grateful for Hugger6933's reassurance and in the end, I think it covered great! Total coverage after 2 coats. I put on at least 3. The production clear is like a mirror. Anyhow thanks for the positive feedback |

Re: 1969 New Addition
This thread started after restoration began. I was seeking advice from Hugger so I began the thread to post pictures. Here are some pictures from when I purchased the truck and before the first ones in the thread.

Re: 1969 New Addition
I do not know. Kind of a first time for me. I had some very nice sheet metal from some shelves that I took down and the rust places were small. I thought it would be best to use the original rockers and corners and floor and just cut out the bad and make some new. Obviously the pictures did not depict the finish welding/grinding. I do not know what others would do but I thought it was a good fix.
I have seen some phenomenal sheet metal work by some members on this site. I was happy to just get the old metal out and the new in and end up with nice straight panels. I think that bed is what is going to make the truck. It is pretty much perfect. I expect when done, if it comes out like the rest of the truck will look as good or better than the day it left the factory. I am hoping to paint the inside of the bed tomorrow and the white on the tailgate. Then all the painting will be done. I might have to touch up the satin black on the front and behind the cab where some overspray landed on it. It might clean off but if not I think an easy spray. |

Very nice truck and great job painting. I wouldn't even know where to begin with a paint job. Great work!

What do you think this truck will be worth when done? I think it will be very original/stock. Has less than 100k original miles. As mentioned earlier, it was purchased from estate of original owner who recently died. |

Re: 1969 New Addition
Still needs clear coat. Very hard to paint because of all the corners and either the gun or the hose wants to bump into things and you can't keep the right distance and turn the gun in every direction. I am sure if you did them all the time you could find the easiest way to do it.
It came out very nice. I didn't bump anything but it is hard to paint. I am scared to paint the clear. Last edited by RestoreAmerica; 06-09-2016 at 09:23 PM. |

Re: 1969 New Addition
Bought a new palm DA sander and some 1500, 3000, and 5000 grit sandpaper along with some buffing supplies. The truck only has minimal dust and looks real nice as is but I want it beautiful. There is not really any orange peel to speak of just a couple of sags in the clear, some dust and a couple of gnats or whatever kind of bug. My research has led me to the conclusion that nowadays it is better to cut the clear dry than to wet sand. Supposedly the 5000 grit even begins the polishing so less time is needed on the buffer/polisher.
Hopefully tomorrow I will install the windshields and get the motor back in. I want to cut and buff before putting any of the moldings or other stuff back on. I expect the sandpapers and tools to arrive Tuesday. |
