Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
If you could get a small chain wrench in there around the rim it would probably work

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
Yes, getting the wrench high up is the key. I don't have a lot of room to spare with my BB, but the handle does pivot so that does help get it in position.
Having said that, it the filter has been crunched too much already, it might just crunch further and not budge. Still worth a try though. |

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
I have one of these strap wrenches, it's never failed me yet on stubborn oil filter. get it up near the base, and crank it down. it will crush the side of the filter but it comes off!

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
Had to use the recip saw and none of my vise grips will stay on to turn...at this point I've even prayed about it a few times. What if any options do I have now, I am trying to avoid damaging the surface.
Any and all advice is really greatly appreciated!

A socket with some teeth on the side going into the holes? Just need a welder and some rod

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
I had one like that.
Got to the same place as you. Ground down the noses on a pair of channel locks to fit in the holes. Twisted right out. Mine was on a brand new 80 T/A. First filter change. Channel locks like this. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Channell...-440/100002119 Last edited by geezer#99; 05-18-2019 at 05:53 PM. |

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
Maybe an adjustable spanner/pin wrench? The nubs are small, but if you could get it to catch it would probably work

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
WOW!!!.you did a number on that...maybe if you made a tool like this that would fit into the outer holes of the filter base...with a long enough pipe to get on it with channellocks or pipe wrench might work

Nice graphics there Greg! I envisioned the same tool but don't have the computer skills to whip up something like that on my $40 phone. I'd like to add a modification to your idea by making the main shaft out of hex stock (like a big Allen wrench). Could stick a socket on the end & hit it w/ an impact. Should come right off. It's AMAZING what an oil change can turn into!!

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
Looks like it's going come out, amazed of how stuck that is. My I suggest is that you add a few more pins to Mongocanfly's tool - round plate instead of bar, use another oil filter for a template for the pins. My concern is that if only 2 pins are used they may just tear up more of the filter base and leave you very little work with. 🤔

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
ok, here's the plan.. next full moon, we all close our eyes and focus on your filter loosening while you turn....
anyways, yah I'm with the last couple of suggestions, devise an apparatus to get some traction on the filter base.. that crimped on sheet metal looks to be about a lost cause at this point.. and not to be a capt. hindsight, but when they feel like that's about to happen, get yourself a real band clamp and choke up on it near the filter base so it doesn't deflect and bites so it can be spun out.. if you can fold the sheep metal inward out of the way, may still be able to get one up there directly around the base.. good luck! fyi, I have these all the way up over 6" and only busted one on a big cat filter in 20 years..

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
I don't know about the skills you have or tools you have access to, but expanding on what mongocanfly pictured, you can buy one of those angle grinder nut tools and bend it to work instead of building something.
Don't know how well it'd work but it's an option |

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
C10 , I dont know if you have it off yet , but if it were me I would get a hole saw just large enough to fit over the threaded area and cut the outer off . At this point you can reach the 2 bolts holding the filter adapter on and remove it all together . This will keep you clear of the sealing area . I would not worry about damaging the adapter . I would want to replace it anyway . I think there is something going on with the threads between the two anyway .

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
At this point I would be using a long cold chisel and hammer it counter clockwise. That was always the last resort on the farm.

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
do you have any large needle nose pliers or angled needled nose? Just stick them in the holes and twist, should come off. You could also use a small punch and tap it gently with a hammer. Good luck

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
would a 4x4 spindle-nut socket come close to fitting in the holes? One of those and an impact might give it an attitude adjustment. Just a thought....
