Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
The thing feels like someone used a torque and an impact! I bought the lisle 60200 strap did nothing but crumble it, so I drilled a hole and tried to turn with a long flathead through it tore it to pieces. I don't know what to do now.
Info: '84 c10 350 cid/th350 Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
This type did the trick for me to get overtightened filters off. Has a 3/8" hole for socket extension/wrench;

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
I've had to use big screwdrivers or small pry bars to getem loose before....prying against the block and on the rolled ring of the filter
I've also tore em all to pieces trying to get me loose...always be sure to oil the filter seal before installing...

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
rip it off down to the o-ring top section and use a hammer and round punch in the oil flow holes .
sounds like someone did NOT lube the o-ring and its about glued to the block .

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
I ran into this problem once before. The fix was to do as indicated above - get off as much of the can as you can, then use vice grips locked in one of the drain holes, then tap, tap, tap the end of the vice grips with a hammer until the filter breaks loose. This method is not without risk, because the tools can slip and you could end up gouging the filter mount surface, causing a permanent future oil leak.
My guess is that you may find more than one rubber ring left on the filter mount surface which caused the sticking issue. I have been told that an overheated engine can cause the rubber ring to fuse to the filter and the filter mount housing. |

I had a stuck filter years ago and bought this sane style tool from Snap-On. Pricey yes, but haven't had a problem removing a filter since. Time is money so it's a 'no brainer'.

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
You either need to drive that screwdriver higher up in the filter or...... you still have enough filter left to use one of these.

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
I drive a big flathead with the head ground down to look like a punch about 30% through the filter (meaning not directly through the middle left to right but off to the side as to not hit the threads the filter spins on to) but very high up on the filter. Then use both sides of the screwdriver to twist it out. Driving a screwdriver through at the bottom is all thin metal so you can't really get torque on it down there without it ripping through. May hose down the top with PB blaster as well. I have the pliers, wrench, and strap dealio (the worst) and none of them worked for the filter I had issues with.

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
Related to my post, I would try the pliers first as you can kind of crush the filter and get some decent torque on it (I think it is the 2nd best method after the screwdriver thing) as if you drive a screwdriver up high and rip that out...it is going to make it that much more difficult to have anything to get ahold of. You do get 2 tries at it though with the screwdriver as you can drive it through on each side (left of middle and right of middle).

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
I have used oil filter strap wrench with some heavy grit sandpaper on one side to give you more grip. You are lucky there is plenty of filter left. If you do resort to screwdriver, I like to use a longer screwdriver so I can grab on both sides and use equal force. Now a days I only use fram filters or the K&N filter on my newer vehicle. Good luck

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
Since you still have a lot of the filter left in place, I would second that idea of coarse sandpaper on an adjustable spring steel type filter wrench. This is the kind I usually use:

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
I welded a chain to a socket that grabs the filter. Silar to this: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...ter-wrench.jpg
Grab it down as low as you can

Re: Stuck on oil filter, seriously tried everything!
What I have done was to take a small cold chisel and carefully bend up the rim where Mongocanfly illustrated in his post. In my experienced once the seal was broken more traditional methods would work.
