Here's some pics of the rear disc setup i used. It uses 77-79 Caddy SedanDeVille rotors (had to turn the axle flange down), GM "metric" front calipers, and a backing plate from Steeltech Solutions (he sells these on ebay). I think rear calipers from a 82-92 4wl disc camaro or some caddy calipers would work if you need an e-brake. The rotors are 5x5 and are some stout pieces. I've only had this setup on for a couple weeks now, but it seems to stop real well. Front brakes are stock 71-72 discs. M/cyl is the Classic Performance Products master cylinder/booster/and proportioning valve for a 4wl disc. So far the prop valve seems perfect out of the box, but I'll have to drive it some more to be sure.
Cost: Brackets $80, these could be fabbed easily by someone with the right equipment; Calipers $21/ea no core; Rotors $60/ea; Pads $25; Machining on axles $Free (coworker has a lathe) but should run about $30. I ran new braided steel lines everywhere because I was rebuilding the whole brake/susp setup. oh and the CPP booster/m cyl./prop valve was $399, ouch but it's top notch quality

I would love to sell you a kit we make(check signature) But you can if you want check out pirate4x4, oh yeah it is a link through my site. go to there forum and search 14 bolt. tons of guys have put up diagrams for it. would however not recomend welding or using spacers for your caliper brackets. I have seen both break offroad..But not our kits Are the bolt patterns the same on a 12 bolt in a el camino and your 1/2 tons??? because if it was, we used corvette rotors and used either 1/2 or 3/4 ton chevy backing plates. just trimmed one bolt hole off and bolted it on. fit 15 rim no problem

I think I will go with the Caddy rotor and the Camaro caliper.... been a great thread. I noticed someone mentioned using Corvette rotors. They might work but they are pricey because the internal part of the hub is machined like a small brake drum. Corvettes use a very small ineffective set of brake shoes for a parking brake inside the rear rotor. I have owned a couple of Corvettes and the parking brake is pretty scary. Chevy would never stick their neck out and call it an EMERGENCY BRAKE and specifically called it a PARKING BRAKE in all of it's publications. There is no way in hell that setup on a Corvette would work if there was a brake failure and you needed an EMERGENCY BRAKE. This has been an excellent thread. I'm glad I started it. Hopefully some of us guys can put together a set of rear discs without having to shell out big bucks.

thanks Gonebad. The guy emailed me the answers to my questions. He said his will clear the 15 inch wheels its his 14 bolt kit that wont. I think I will try a set. I got a good used set of caddy calipers last night and I have a almost new set of 92 front rotors, and some new 3/8 flat iron so I'm almost set. I need to do a complete rear brakes on a 72 so I can do this as cheap.

I have the 77 Seville set up. 12" rotors, offset backing plates (rotors point front on left , rear on right )and e-brake calipers. I know the discs will not fit the axles without turning them down becuse I have a set of shafts off the truck. Looks like a 1/8 has to come off, could do that with a grinder when the axles are in and turning in the housing. As for the backing plates I know I have to redrill them. I could use a housing off the truck to do that set up. I got the whole setup for $100 at the bone yard.

I got my plans for the brackets today. It says to use 83 camaro calipers for emergency brake. I have used those calipers before on a previous project and the emergency brake cables don't both face forward one faces to the rear. Does anyone know of another rear caliper that will bolt up the same as the 83 camaro and has a emergency brake.

I worked a little with AZ-Kickin on their disc brake kit. a few problems that were discovered along the way is the offset using a top hat style rotor off say a newer GM truck and clearing 15's. We also found that there are problems with mounting off the stock flange. That flange is about guaranteed to fail given enough time or it's going to shear the bolts. My truck and Robzilla's 72 Blazer were the test muels on the 12 bolt set up. Rob has a doubler and was snapping off bolts and axle flanges. AZ Kicking ended up including a weld on bracket to put the brake adaptor plate into Double shear to correct for the problem. as far as I know they are the only company that has done that. Some companies went with a full peice like the one list in the first post but it still has the potential for problems. Disc's can put a twisitng force on the flange the drum didn't. That stock flang is insuficient.

Grim Reaper, I used Lawson grade 8 bolts. Those bolts were just some I used when I was checking the fit of the backing plate. |
