67-72 Rear Disc Setup - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

The other day, just for the heck of it, I purchased a set of plans for a rear disc brake setup from a guy on ebay. The plans were drawn on autocad and are excellent. The detail and simplicity is extraordinary. The entire setup is drawn to scale and templates are provided to cut mounting brackets. All you have to do is transfer them to 3/8" plate and cut them out. I should be able to do it no problem with my plasma cutter then some light cleanup afterwards. The plans also include a very comprehensive set of instructions and a complete summary bill of materials. All of the parts are "off the shelf GM parts" that require no modifications. You even get a rear e-brake. A buddy of mine already made a set of rear discs up for me, but I think I will go with these. The cost of the parts shouldn't be over a few hundred bucks. The auction lists it for an '87 but I spoke with the vendor and he said it will work on a '71/'72 rear end no problem. A guy I know makes Harley parts and I will have him chrome the brackets when they are done. It will be a little while, but I will share pics when I get them done. Just thought I would share this with you guys. It looks pretty good for a rear disc setup for a reasonable price.

I've been researching differant rear disc set-ups and that does look like a nice one. You said that all the parts are off the shelf GM parts that need no mods. Does that include the rotors??
I haven't been able to find rotors that would fit over the axle
without machining and or drilling holes to accommodate a six lug bolt pattern. I think that would be a great advantage to be able to replace rotors with off the shelf ones.

Gary, I would try front rotors from a 71-87 K10. I know that will have the pattern you need.

Some people have used Lincoln or Caddy rears I thought to get the disc brake setup I believe.

I've tried a set of front rotors from a mid 70,s K10, but they wouldn't fit over the axles without machining either the inside of the rotor and or the outside of the axle flange. If the lincoln or Caddy rotors will fit over the axle flange then drilling new holes wouldn't to bad.

I'VE GOT A 9" FORD REAREND OUT OF A 76 LINCOLN MK4 (I GOT IT COMPLETE OUT OF A BONEYARD FOR $85) IT HAS A 5" ON 5" BOLT PATTERN, DISC BRAKES & AN E-BRAKE. IT'S IN THE SHOP RIGHT NOW. I TRADED A BUNCH OF PARTS TO A BUDDY OF MINE FOR HIM TO REBUILD A POSI UNIT, & INSTALL ALL NEWCLUTCHES, BEARINGS & SEALS IN IT. HE'LL ALSO REMOVE ALL THE PERCHES ON THE TUBE. WHEN I INSTALL IT ..... I'LL HAVE TO SET THE PINION ANGLE, & WELD ON NEW PERCHES & MOUNT A PANHARD BAR (ADJUSTABLE).

I checked those plans before. When I spoke to him he told me it wouldn't fit a 15 inch rim. This is the same problem I keep running into.

Those are the rotors that are listed on the parts list. Looks like John has found a great setup with the Lincoln rearend. You can't beat the strength of a 9" not to mention the availability of gears. If it doesn't need to be shortened, that's really a score. Didn't think to ask if they would work with a 15" wheel. I may have to wait a while. I was planning on putting 20's on eventually. I'm in the process of installing rear disc brakes on my truck. It's the same setup that is on a mid 90's Impala SS. I had to make the backing plate.This disc brake setup weigh's 25 lbs less then the old drum brakes. Here is a picture.

wow. good deal man! can you also find out if there is a way to have 6 lug rear discs? like use the 4x4 rotors? and find out if this is at all possible? you should get those reproduced you could sell them on the parts board!

Very clean looking 383......You might want to think about using grade 8 bolts though.

gonebad2, I'm going to use grade 8 bolts, grade 5 bolts was all I had when I was checking the fit of the backing plate.

Not trying to be negative but I ran the 9 inch ford rear end lincoln disc brake set up on my race car and the calipers are crappy just my 2 cents

Why were you unhappy with the Lincoln calipers? I would have thought they would have worked pretty well. I bet a Lincoln weighs a lot more than a 67-72 shortbed.

The Caddy rotors will NOT fit 71-72 axles flange. The axle flange AND the center hub will have to be turned down in order for the rotor to slip over axle flange.

How do I know? I have already done this modification with the late 70's Caddy Seville stuff.

Gonebad you said you use the rotors off of a 71 to 87 k10. Do the plans say anything about machining the axle? I have emailed the guy you got your plans from but havent got any answers. I was trying to see what parts are needed before I jumped into some thing that is going to cost me too much.

I found a website related to your project a few weeks ago. The company sells some of the fabricated parts that you are describing. All you do is add oem discs, pads, and rotors. Here is the site:

WELL I HOPE THATS NOT THE CASE.... I HAVE A COUPLE OF FRIENDS WITH THESE REARENDS IN STREETRODS, & THEY WORK REALLY WELL. YOU DO NEED A 4 WHEEL DISC OR AN ADJUSTABLE PROPORTIONING VALVE TO MAKE THEM WORK PROPERLY.
