That's the stuff it's. 2 part mix. And I usually start with like 100 grit paper to take down the high spots or not so smooth edges and then block with 180 then feather around with 220 and 300 and then sometimes 400 grit. I'm not a huge fan of the primer will fill it method I like to be able to make my bodywork smooth enough to seal it if I had too. I usually use an etch primer first for any bare metal any larger than the size of a nickel. Then a few coats of high build primer and some guild coat then block with 400 and then 600 and paint....hope this helps

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
In Post #499 I mentioned that I was planning on some Steering Wheel work during this past work week... well, seems my dremel tool went missing, so I spent the week scratching my head, trying to remember last place said tool was seen...
After digging around and moving other tools, wa la… it was buried under my framing nailer, hiding in the dark recesses of the black box the nailer was residing in...:wash: Now that it re-emerged, time for some wheel work… Here are some pics before the actual work begins… Plans are to use the dremel to grind out the cracks and fill with epoxy then paint… Any tips or suggestions are welcome, I haven't repaired any steering wheels in the past...

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
don't know how others approach the steering wheel cracks but i do it sorta like fiberglass repair. i take an x-acto knife and cut a V in the scratch about 1/16 inch wide then cut a deeper reverse ^ as best i can. which make an hourglass shape where the crack was. mix up jb weld and push the mix into the cuts. it will shrink up a bit but should lock the crack so it won't reappear. another coat of jb should get it pretty flush and after that its bodywork.
theres probably other and better ways but thats just my way... have a nice holiday this week my friend and stay warm... |

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Good work on the wheel. I use the same process. The last one in the 65 I used a 2 part panel adhesive or epoxy as I was out of JB weld. It worked great, no shrink back. Primed it, sanded it, sealed it and the base cleared it. Wet sealer, wet base wet clear..no dry time in between. Let it sit 24 hrs and all good.

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Looks great! I used JB on mine and found that a little bit of heat gun action kinda helped "wick" it into the cracks.

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Need to fix my steering wheel too. I know it had some typical minor cracks, but I haven't looked at it in so long, I don't really remember what they look like. I know some companies (such as Eastwood) make a kit specifically for these kinda issues. I've seen others use JB weld as well, & it seems to do the job just as good. Nice work, & hope ya'll have a Happy Thanksgiving as well.

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Not too much accomplished today… other than some Honey-Do's...:wash:
I did get some sanding and primer on the wheel… Once the primer was applied I spotted some areas that need attention... Will be steady on it, plan on painting by Wednesday... Weather forecast beyond that is Cold and Nasty! and my paint area is not heated... Stay Tuned!

Not sure why the latest pics posted are clickable thumbnails???
Here's a teaser peek at my Sail Panel that I plan on modifying… Plan to add to the lettering... [/IMG] Imageshack changed their links… So I either get a clickable thumbnail or a clickable link...
