Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Installed a vacuum reservoir to help the brakes. It didn't seem to help. The brakes have been poor since the 402 with a big cam was installed, compared to the stock 350. Push the pedal hard and takes too long to slow down. Stock vacuum gauge shows 12hg on deceleration but it waivers a lot with throttle position. I hoped the vacuum gauge would be more stable at more then 10hg with this reservoir, but maybe the gauge pickup is on the motor side, not the brake side. I have an expensive Hella electric vacuum pump but was hoping to avoid installing it as a solution.

I added the same one...didn’t really make stopping much different. She stops, but not like I have power brakes. Took it off since it didn’t make a difference

Post Vacuum Assist Brakes

Firstly, you need to have a check valve between the engine and the resivoir, since you're never reading above 12" clearly there's a low vacuum issue .

The gauge also needs to be on the booster side of the check valve .

Shouldn't need to add a vacuum pump once everything is properly plumbed up .

The black plastic cap in the second photo is the 1 way valve. The hose connected to it is from the engine. I blew into it before the install and confirmed the valve worked.

I followed these instructions http://www.jegs.com/InstallationInstructions/200/270/270-99590-1.pdf

Got something done today. Removed both battery cables and cleaned those up a bit.

Used Dremel Tool to remove paint and epoxy primer from other ground point on core support.

Ordered two battery clamps from O'Reilly's Auto.

Checked prices on battery cable (4 gauge) at NAPA and Advance Auto.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Made some money for a fleet side bed for my K/10 short, by helping a friend with his 70 4x4 BLAZER. Didn't do all this in a day, but it felt good and I am happy with results. New ring gear spacer, bolts Loctite and torqued, shimmed. I know the spacer is not the hot setup but will up grade this winter. New axles, bearings, seals, complete rear brakes and gear oil. Beach ride test run soon! THANKS for all the information and help found here. I believe you can teach a old dog new tricks! Nothin special but here are a few pics. My friend in pic helping with C clips.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

I picked up my new battery clamps and then I went to NAPA and they cut new cables for me. I also bought the eyelets, solder, and heat shrinking wrap for the ends. I removed three brackets from Evaporust, rinsed, and hit with rust converter. I then put my last to brackets into Evaporust soak.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

getting ready to do something I was hoping not to have to do. the reman 700r4 I just put in (maybe 80 miles on it ) has to come out and go back to the seller. hasn't worked right since I put it in. and yes the TV cable was adjusted correctly. driving down the road at 60 mph, it will shift down to 3rd and never shift back. doesn't shift to 1st when I come to a stop. just not right. Oh Well.

mmm...is this an auto truck? If it is, I hope you checked that the vacuum modulator on the trans for oil leaks...I have seen a blown modulator suck trans oil straight into an engine, resulting in loads of smoke...just like your pic....

Hope I am wrong...but...

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

checked everything...oil fowled plug #8....pulled engine....I'm guessing the PO built himself from a short block. when tearing apart the torque of bolts was all over the map....china wall gasket would have failed soon anyway (inconsistent depth & width).

So....always looking for an excuse for more shiny things....bought an ATK HP32C. Going to pull the carb and re-install my FITech from old motor

Left to right....2,4,6,8.

8 had all the oil on it. Based on 4 & 6 something else was going on also

Ok...sounds like you are on the right track...I would check the modulator anyways...#8 is the cylinder is direct port alignment to factory vacuum fitting for both modualtor and brake booster....

Have fun mate...and you are right...nothing nicer than something new and shiny...glad to see you went Vortec....nice engine!

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Well after a year of having my truck just sitting in the driveway, finally made some progress on it, changed the brake lines, installed Boyds fuel cell, and got The Circle D stall installed, unfortunately after looking at the oil dipstick noticed water in the oil. So now I got to see where its coming from. Got to back to work, so hoping to back at it Wednesday.

With the help of the forum, I found and installed a set of trash guards under the cowl. Let those leaves start falling!

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

I wanted to see if I can get the battery and temp gauges working, so I dug into the wiring to see what I have and don’t have.

Discovered that my dash harness has the wiring for the battery gauge, but the engine harness does not. Not a surprise since the truck is made up from 67, 68 and 70 parts. Can I add the 2 wires to the block on the engine side of the firewall or do I have to run them separately?

The wire for the temp gauge runs into the engine bay, but was disconnected when a PO added the under dash gauges. I should be able to hook that up once I get the correct temp sensor.

These discovery missions seem small, but they are all important as I continue to make the truck better.

Found my intake leak on the 350. Sounds sooo much better. These gaskets seem so cheap.

You do mean "my exhaust leak" not"intake leak"...unless you had these exhaust manifold to head gaskets fitted to the intake side!

Have fun mate
