Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver

Made some headway tonight. The motor and tranny are just about ready to pull. all the extra BS is off it.

Spent some time digging around in the grease and dirt trying to find bolts for the motor and tranny.

What is the easiest method of getting it all out? Together? Separate them?

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver

I pulled mine out in one piece but my front end was off. It is HEAVY as a complete unit. The most trouble was caused by the floor shifter and other linkage (starter, gas & brake pedals getting hung up). I removed (2) head bolts and replaced them with (2) long eyebolts to hook the chain to. It provided a good anchor point.

Good luck.

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver

I was able to sneak away from work for a 1/2 day today. Was able to get the drive shaft and torque tube disconnected form the tranny. The unbolted the front motor mounts and some misc stuff that was in the way.

Then out came the motor and tranny. Wow.......that is heavy!!

My son and I must have scraped 25lbs of crap off the frame.

I then hit it with some heavy degreaser and the pressure washer!!

I cleaned up the SBC as well.

Are you going to give the engine and frame a fresh coat of paint before re-installing? I think it just gives it that clean finished look.

Since you've already pressure washed it, I'd paint it. If nothing else just to make it cleaner/easier to work on in the future.

I agree and think it would look great painted fresh orange with that blue worn firewall in the back.

Are you going to offset the engine, or move the steering box over.

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver

I don't think you can off set the motor due to exhaust manifold clearance on the right side. Ive got rams horn manifolds and they clear the right frame rail by about 1" with the engine centered.
I off set the steering box about 30 years ago & it still works fine.

Maybe that is the case......I will not know until it is mocked up.

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver

I figured a little bit of both would be needed. Little shuffle of the motor, and a little spacing of the steering box.

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver

Awesome progress today.

Bolted the TH350 to the SBC along with the headers and dropped it into Henry to get a test fit and mock up motor mounts and transmission crossmember.

Went fairly smooth considering I was working solo.

Chassis Engineering Inc motor mounts.

Ready to pull it all out and do the final welding, then paint!!

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver

So after thinking about it for the night.....I decided to offset the motor to the passenger side to allow room for the steering box. I had briefly thought about PS......but decided against it for a number of reasons.

So I spent the better part of a day taking apart what I had completed and making room for the steering box.

The passenger side mount had to be shortened and recessed into the frame rail. The driver side was pulled out of the frame rail.

I used some 1/4-20 bolts to hold everything in place while I pulled the motor and to use them as a reference upon assembly.

I was not happy with the initial welds on the drivers side mount, so I boxed it all in. Overkill.....but I will sleep better at night.

After the motor mounts were done....I spaced out the steering box by 1-1/2" with some angle iron and some dom tubing.

The motor has been opened up and looks great. I am going to button it back up, throw a coat of paint on it and call it good.

The punch list is getting smaller!!!

How much did you off set the motor and what brand of headers are you using.
