Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

About 2 1/2 years ago we had a whole house generator installed. Runs off our 500 gallon propane tank. It has come on 3-4 times for up to an hour. The lights barely flicker when its needed. We went a Kolher unit.
But today I spent helping at a local body shop. 3-4 hours. Final sanding prior to paint on a 30 Model A front fender.
And block sanding filler on a 65 Cuda hood to get it flat.
Both good for the shoulder muscles. LOL.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

I think the wick burns itself down to a certain level no matter how long it starts out at but it's worth a try anyway.
Thanks.
I have other skinner candles on the way.
My poor man's generator charges up a couple 12V batteries in here that also can be used in my truck if necessary.
I was surprised at how little energy they used up the other night and if they do eventually run low it only takes a short time to charge them up again.

Sounds like a nice generator setup.

My shoulder muscles are getting their exercise swinging this thing.

I’m very partial to the Fiskers X27 . Lighter and works better than a standard maul . Haven’t found much that it won’t split . But I do have a Timber Wolf t1 splitter too.

I bought my splitter at the local hardware store thinking it wouldn't see much use, boy was I wrong.

I took rear end apart to see why I had no breaks, found hub assembly was scored by rivets now no one has any repair parts to replace

Yea I had some serious Redwood size logs that were kicking my tail and a neighbor must have taken pity on me so he loaned me his log splitter for as long as I wanted to borrow it.

I really don't like to borrow things so I used it for the really big logs and now I'm down to the more manageable stuff that still gives my shoulder muscles a much needed workout without causing my arms to fall off.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

A long wick smokes and leaves that soot on everything around it.
Once the candle has burned long enough for that thick outer wall to be soft, you can gently squeeze it in towards the flame and get it to melt, but not too fast, or it will drown the flame. OR cut down the wall to just above the puddle level and let it start over. A fine tooth hack saw blade works well.
Best way to avoid the issue is to not buy those huge candles. Get smaller diameter that will melt the wall as it burns down.

I got started on a new restoration this week. I've had this car for seven years and another like it before for 15 and have been accumulating parts all that time. It only needs a few patch panels. Complete, 1 piece floor and trunk panels, complete quarters and wheel houses will be a good start...

That's quite an undertaking. Say, those wouldn't happen to be Appliance brand mag wheels would they? The red center caps look familiar.

The wheels are stamped steel. I didn't find any brand on them, but didn't look very hard either. The Bow Tie caps are rather unique too. I just bought the set cheap to use as rollers when I bought the car in 2016.
How are you doing, Boog, hoping you are coming out of your situation.

Oh, ok. I cannot tell they are bowties from here.
I'm getting better, slowly. I sure don't want a repeat. Thanks for asking.

That is exactly what I did a few days ago with a hacksaw, seems like such a waste so I also ordered some smaller candles as well. https://a.co/d/d3B7daN

You guys are amazingly talented, you're undertaking massive bodywork projects while I'm stumped & confused by fat candles.

Nasty weather out tonight, power could go out at any second but my smaller candles arrived and are here to save me!

These dang things are barely bigger than a birthday candle but at least I have a lot of them.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

I was working in Florida in '01 and the power went out at the rental. I had to stumble in the dark down to the 7-11 for matches and candles. I went to Walmart later and bought some LED "candles" that are waterproof so you can toss them in a pool at night to see better (I guess). Twist on and off. Don't remember how much I paid but the battery just went dead in the last one. Not continuously on, of course. I'm going to buy some more. I don't like the soot from candles, even though my wife has a couple hundred pounds of scented candles.

That's halirous!

Yea the candles are a backup to my oil lamps which are a backup to my Coleman lamp and I have plenty of flashlights so I think I have enough artificial light until daylight arrives around here.

Remember well those drip candles, black lights, beer tab chains and more. Have a wine bottle covered with the drippings after many hours of listening to The Doors, Stones, Iron Butterfly, Bob Seger....etc. Still listen to that type of music, Yeah, I'm old, LOL.

Have a large wood burning fireplace with glass doors, LED battery back up lights, gas kitchen stove, with igniters but matches for back up, hand crank radio, candles, oil lamps....all for a just in case need. Have lost power a couple times thru the years during winter storms and such, longest was 18 hrs. Fireplace kept the house comfortable even with out power for the fans which are tied into the central air ducting.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

We have a few LED lights around here too, but after 2 hours into a blackout, I plug the 7k watt generator into the outlet on the side of the house, switch off the main breaker in the box and fire it up. The neighbor we can see thru the trees has outside lights on her pole shed and when they come on, I know to turn it off and switch back to line power...

I did (and do) the same thing but I decided long ago not to get old.

Stained the front of the cabin up to the bottom of the upstairs window today, that sunbaked wood is really soaking up the stain except for behind the folding chairs that have been there for about a dozen years.

And yes, climbing up that ladder does seem a bit more difficult these days.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

I took a drive into town for the first time in 6 weeks since I've had the shingles. It started in my eye and my vision was affected. Getting better. Also one ear is stopped up.
I left home and all was fine. I stopped at the bank. As I was pulling away, with my window down, I heard an irritating screeching, scraping sound. I stopped, it stopped, I eased forward, it started again. What in the world is going on here? I got out and looked around the truck for anything I might have ran over. Brake pad screechers maybe? The truck had not been moved for 6 weeks but the pads weren't even close to being ready to replace. I stopped and opened my door and it was still sounding sitting still. Then it hit me! The radio was turned down and that station was off line with just static coming through the speakers.
Lord have mercy, that was an easy fix.

Curious, what stain/protectant (if that's a word) do you use on the wood siding, and how often to you stain it?

Glad to hear you're getting better Boog.

Those of us who wear hearing aids go thru that quite often as... what we do hear...we have no sense of direction. Sometimes I'll ask the wife, what is that noise and she will tell me or pinpoint it. As we all know most women/wives have hearing like a coyote.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

We sit about 4' apart. I usually use just one ear bud while watching vids on my laptop, tv muted and her reading her books. I usually have the volumn on about 50 %. Some times she will turn her head my way apparently hearing part of my vids. I never say anything. Her hearing is beyond PERFECT! She can sometimes hear some of it when I have the ear bud in my right ear. She sits to my left? She says she is cursed with fantastic hearing.
Truth be told, I am cursed with her fantastic hearing. She hears things I never said.
