Perfectly. Unfortunately - when I let the 6 go I forgot to take the flex-plate off (just lazy) and had to buy one from Jeg's for the 283.

A Homer moment.

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins

Hey Mac, good to hear you got the tan running. The thread is entertaining as can be! Did I remind you about drilling the bleed hole in the thermostat lip? If not sorry about that. A 1/4 hole in the lip lets the air bleed out and if you keep the cap off and the coolant level about an inch below the top of the radiator, it usually will not puke over the top when the thermostat opens.
Do you have a spin on oil filter? If so remember the oil change interval for that new engine. I think I posted it for you somewhere in here. If not let me know, I'll repost it. Lastly will you have this back in time for the Brothers Truck Show this year. If not you should go anyway, take your son and grandson. It is full of a lot of cool old Chevy trucks. Plus you may meet some board members there.

Thanks, Man - it’s taken way too long to get to this point, but I’m glad I finally made it.

Went with the Milodon thermostat, 160 degree, high-flow and it’s got a bleed ‘dimple’. After I threw that P.O.S. Chinese thermostat as far as I could and installed the real one - everything worked perfectly - coolant wise.

Yes I have a spin-on oil filter (bought the NAPA adapter kit) and yes I need a refresher on the oil change interval.

Can’t make the show, as my mom’s coming in Thursday afternoon from Phoenix for the grandson’s birthday weekend and I’ll be booked through Monday. Bummer.

Mac.

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins

First oil change and filter, right after cam break in ,(so when you get it home)
Next at 500 miles
Then at 1000 miles
Next at 2000 miles
Again at 3000 miles
Then every 3000 there after.

I personally would use the recommended amount of oil additive for the first 1000 miles at least, until the rings seat. After that you should be OK, but you could add 4 to 8 ounces with each oil change if you are concerned about lubrication.

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins

My 283 after installing a new intake. It was built 11 years ago, other than changing the water pump, its run flawless. Now its getting a lil tired, getting some blowback, so it will be replaced for a 350 for more torque, then the 283 will be rebuilt and shellved for a 62 to 65 nova project, someday.

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins

Piston Ring Seating Myth Time:

The truck is coming home after I leave work at 5PM Friday, 7/31. The shop is 1.5 miles from my house - which should allow time to get 'The Tan' up to operating temperature.

If it's actually ready for driving home I plan on taking her down some small hills (about 75 feet in elevation) and mashing the crap out of the accelerator (once I'm sure the brakes function correctly) and get up to about 70 mph and slam on the brakes as hard as I can (drums all around with power booster), go back up the hill and repeat the process 3-4 times, and/or get arrested for speeding in a 35 mph zone.

The Myth?: It seats the rings before the honing cross-hatch has worn off.

......or not?

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins

Sounds like it oughta knock any glaze off your brake shoes!! I've heard just about everything at this point....''take it easy for the first 500''....''dont drive at a constant speed''.....''drive it how you would normally''. I couldn't tell ya.

Make sure the e-brake works too. Just in case. You would have to coast around the block quite a few times to slow down from 75.

Does this guy build hobby stock race engines? Old stock Chevy 2BBL intakes are worth bank to these guys for some reason. I swapped 3 of mine for some cast iron 4BBL intakes for Qjets and the guy was practically overjoyed to get them. Not worth much to me, I would rather have the Qjet and drive the primaries most of the time and still have the ability to tromp on it if needed.
I think they like em for the TBI swaps if Im not mistaken?

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins

Talked with my transmission guy last night - apparently the PO (a friend's son) had put posi in this truck and the rear end may not be from a 65'. Asked if I wanted to put the money into overhauling it and I agreed immediately.

The new gears will have the 283 turning 2,450 @ 65 mph because of the short (60 series) T/A Radials, which is just fine - in my book.

Hopefully I'll get to actually drive this truck some day.

Mac.
