Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver
So I have some miles on the old guy now. Runs like a champ.
I think I need another set of wheels with some cheap tires on them. The wide whites are taking a beating!! I taught my oldest son the better points of a smokey burnout today...........turns out my 3.43 rear end is limited slip. Next step is going through the suspension. Front springs are sagging and I am sure all the shackles and bolts are shot. Lots of rattles and rough ride. Probably going to lose some of the low stance, but it will be worth it for a little better ride. Then start tracking down rattles and cab noise....... I will also be looking for a little better gearing for the highway. I do not have a tach, but I am guessing I am pulling 3K at 65 right now. Would like to drop that a bit. Speedo is off about 15mph at 65mph. Need to fix that........ If I could do the whole conversion again about all I would do differently is change from hugger headers to ram horns to make fitment a bit easier. Other than that......the whole experience was pretty painless!! Thanks for all the input......made it all pretty easy for a newbie!! |

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver
nice glad your running it. I'v been putting more miles on my truck than ever this year, made it a point to. but....its rained so much I keep her in alot too.
I have an nv3500 5speed with 3.42 gears and I run about 2100-2200 rpm at about 65mph. I just picked up my 5th one of those transmissions, hard to find but so nice to have and runs good. Oh and I have the G78 bias whitewalls on 14" rim. its about 26" tall I think. new components will def make it sit higher, my friend did up his leafs and shackles in his 54' belair, he gained like an inch.

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver
Walked right past my company truck and hoped in Henry for my 15 mile commute to work.
Henry's step brother "Gene" was here too!! Gene is a baddass '49 GMC owned by a coworker. Sweet build done about the same time as Henry!! 383 stroker, tubed with narrowed 9", over the frame headers..........dream build list!! Cool thing is "Gene" is also a Family truck It was Casey's Grampa's truck. Both trucks live 4 blocks apart!! |

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver
thats some darn cool history and patina there. I wish I could get a hold of that, a family heirloom of any sort. So by the looks, gene runs down the track. any info on that? was planning on taking my 49' I'm working on to the strip once its done, just to see what she'll do.

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver
Nice to see you've got Henry back together and are now out enjoying it. I know once we put our 56 back together there were ALOT of squeaks, chirps. clunks etc in the cab. Once you change out your old spring, you'll notice a big difference. I went with mono leafs but if I had to do it all over, I'd get some Posie super sliders. You lose about 3/4" of ride height but you can run a taller tire and you're going to want all the side wall you can get.
Are you running the stock seat? I find the spring in the seat base are an added suspension perk in a dropped axle truck

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver
Nothing new to post.
Got the timing dialed. Somehow it was very retarded. Set perfect now. Runs even better now. Carb is dialed in as well. Lost of little stuff to do, but I am enjoying driving it to much. If I go more than a couple days without at least a short cruise I get crabby!! |

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver
Coach. I'm sure this was covered long ago during the original build but what center caps and lugs are you using on your cragars? I like yours better than the spider caps and the spiders would cost around $160

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver
The bullet center caps were Cragar brand, I think I got them from Jeg's for less than $10 each. The bullet lug nuts came from Jeg's as well.

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver
Getting the itch to do some wrenching on Henry.
Hunting season is almost over......so I have some parts on order. I ordered a cam to wake up the SBC a little. I ordered a Xtreme Energy XE268H. I also order a 12 circuit EZ wiring harness. Let the fun begin!! |

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver
Slowly tinkering as I have time.............there is never enough time.
Cam, sprockets and chain are here. I started "Finally" putting in my passenger side Altman EZ latch kit. It is sad I put the drivers side in almost 2 years ago. My 12 circuit EZ wiring harness came in as well!! |
