Re: GM Semis
This is one of the few machines that my father had when he first started farming. It was originally a shorter wheelbase with a 5th wheel and was used in northern Manitoba. When he started farming in this area, this was considered a large truck to haul grain with. And now, it doesn't even go out of the yard.
I believe it is a 1969 and it still runs with a 6-71 Detroit that had been rebuilt twice. |

Re: GM Semis
I want to point out a pretty rare part on Peterson's Red GMC 9500, which is the Running Board. Most 9500's have Side Saddle Tanks instead. This is the first Long Nose 9500 that I can ever remember that has a Running Board. Notice the Length of it.

Re: GM Semis
By the Directional Lights, it is a '66 or a '67. The Emblem on the side of the hood also tells us it is an earlier model. Looks like it has a 5 X 4 Trans. These were real impressive trucks when they first were introduced in the mid '60's, as well as they still are today.

Also, it's a 4+4 transmission and the secondary has a little different shift pattern than your average 4 speed transmission. 3rd and 4th gears are swapped around in comparison to where they would be on say an SM465 or NV4500. |

Re: GM Semis
Tim, the Directional Lights only kind of gives us an "indication". The real way to tell would be by the VIN Number.
Although rare, it could also be a '65. I'm not sure how many they made, but I have never seen one that I know of or even seen one for sale. But I have found some literature and early factory photos that were labeled as '65. Bill

Re: GM Semis
Some great looking trucks showing some nice history. Too bad there aren't many of these on the road any longer. Just to see some in a show once in a while would be fun.

Re: GM Semis
That CrackerBox is sure pulling one heck of a trailer. Eight Axels!!
I would hate to go through a Toll Booth that charges Per Axel (11 Total). Bill

Re: GM Semis
Yeah,I think it's silly when states require such things. It's just a tandem tractor and it's not like more weight is on the trailer than any other tandem. Thing is,the roads seem to wear just the same in multiple axle states as ones w/o such requirements. They did some BS here in MD where all the dump trucks went to triples or add a tag or haul less. Nothing changed except the cost to truckers.
Not a semi, but looky here. Dual steer axles and single rear:

Re: GM Semis
Tim, I believe that truck is a Semi. I wouldn't have known it myself, but I read a story about those trucks that either that company or possibly by the previous outfit that would haul trailers one way and use the tank to back-haul fuel. I believe the outfit was in Maine. They said the idea worked good until some kind of road requirement law changed that made it no longer worth it.
I remember reading something about bob-tailing empty was a bear to drive. Look close, I believe we can see the 5th Wheel. Bill
