Re: The hindenburg

thanks duudes! I have been thinking about the truck and about lowering it. What i now have in mind is to change it all over to 1/2 ton rear axle and install trailing arms on the rear with P/B rear trailing arm bracket. Then due to how big the frame is i will pancake another stock crossmember and use nate relocated ball joint arms, 1/2 spindles, brakes and 6 lug wheels then and fully bag-it all the way around with stocker style wheels .I have almost all the parts to get started in a 3-4 weeks

Re: The hindenburg

is that because you can't get 3/4 ton dropped spindles?

the 1/2 ton rear will give you a better gear ratio options for cruising and an automatic

I think that is a good plan. There are tons of '73-'87 parts trucks out there for cheap that would make great suspension donors. Personally, if you're going to go 1/2 ton, stay with 5-lug wheels. Lots more dogdish hubcap options if you're going with the stocker look.

Re: The hindenburg

GMC did use a jet hood ornament on the 60-61's, but the wings had "intakes" on them.

This thread has all of the history and pictures of the types:

A Drag bike or a Salt Flats style bike in the back would look really cool with that box. Look like a old race hauler .

Re: The hindenburg

thanks! I tex nate today and got the ball rolling on ordering my parts for this build.the truck has a huge frame (8") so can't run a d/m so i will use his relocate upper & lower arms and another pancake cross member ,the rear is leaf (gmc)so we will use nates trailing arm crossmember and relocate with trailing arms and a huge notch.I will switch the suspension to 1/2 ton stuff which i already have .I will run a 28" tall tire up front and a 30" out back not sure if am going with 22" wheels or 16"steelies

Re: The hindenburg

Have you thought about just Z'ing the front instead of pancaking the crossmember? We just did a 2" Z on my '64, and it was way easier than I was expecting. The cool thing about it is that depending on how far you "Z", you can have a good drop (mine is 5".....2" Z with a 3" Bell Tech drop spindle)with stock coils, and still be able to run stock shocks. It's a good base to work from if you decide to go air-ride because you can get it slammed without major camber issues. I think that you and Joe could knock that out pretty quickly.

I attached some pictures on my build thread of the "Z" we just did. I'm not done yet, but you'll get the idea.

Very cool looking truck...cant wait to see how this turns out. I do like the bed on your better than the one on the 1st page. I like how it slants at the top.
