just found some pic's of grx's truck and several other longbed's on the forum and they have same fender as me but there truck's use the shortbed mount. very odd

That's really odd if that's the way it came from Chevrolet. In the drawings posted there seems to be a clear distinction between long and short bed spare mounts.

I took my bed off a rusted out '68 truck sitting under a tree in a pasture. In rural Texas it's pretty common for a farmer/rancher to just park a used up truck and buy a fresh one.

unfortunately this is the only pic I have of it before I sanded it down. bought the truck from the original owner and it matched the rest of the truck exactly who knows what happened back in the day but I guess now I know either way I need a new bracket if I want the tire to set were it should.

I've had mine for the last twenty years. Spare is more for looks , I've been lucky not to have needed to use it cause it's only a 7" wheel with a 215-65 tire.

I would have liked it hidden as well but there were a couple of factors on mine that had me committed to going the visible bedside mount route. First, the spare tire cut-out fender was already in place and second, I relocated my gas tank to the rear of the bed frame.

I much prefer the side-mounted spare--both for practicality and looks--and I hope someday to get around to collecting the parts necessary to mount mine there. My trailer hitch won't let me mount one underneath, anyway.

Gotcha, for what it’s worh, I was able to find one by posting for it on the Facebook C-10 forum. You might have some luck that way. It took me 3+ years to find one!

It's an old thread but a good one. My 1970 looked like this when I bought it, it took me a while to figure out that a PO had decided he didn't like the cutout fender and decided to weld a patch in. Which didn't work out too well. Found the side tire carrier mount in my SPID, of course. I later replaced the box entirely with a "regular" fender, but if I could find a nice original fender I probably wouldn't be able to resist putting it back to original.

I found a nice carrier bracket at the junkyard, they're funny looking, I thought it was homemade.

Ah--this thread just pointed out an anomaly on my 67 long stepside. It has both--a "smooth" fender and a side-mount spare. I am going to guess that this is an installation by a PO. I have not had the truck that long--I guess I should take the spare off and see what it going on. There seems to be room between the cab and the fender for the tire, but it sure doesn't look like all the others.

I didn't think of a rear mounted gas tank, I still a potential bomb behind my seats.

I have a hide-a-hitch under my truck also, and when I bought the truck, the PO had just set the spare in the bed, but the complete spare mounting hardware was still under there along with the hitch.

I did manage to get the spare and the hitch to live together under, but had to notch the hitch brackets slightly and angle them a little with a few washers at the front mounting points.

And it is still a tight fit.

My hitch has longer arms that bolt to the frame further forward, leaving no room. Good, solid hitch, but no joy for the spare.

I prefer the side mount anyway.

How do you ensure that you can open that lock when you need to?

Both our '69 GMC and my 80 Chevy came with the spare tire under the bed.

I moved mine up into the inside of the box with a homemade bracket made from the under bed carrier.

That lock is part of a 4 lock set, so every now and then I put a freshly lubed up lock on it.

I also keep my vehicle keys separate from my house keys etc, and that lock key is with the house keys that I never leave home without.

But now that you mention it, maybe I could include one of my spare lock keys on the same ring as my truck keys.

Did have a flat about a year ago, (17 year old tire actually exploded! ) but other than scaring me half to death, everything worked out well and I drove it home on the spare.

Did get 4 new tires after that episode!
