Why is the spare tire on the side of the stepside version so rare? Personally, I love it there!

I'd say it was more common then rare on stepsides. I too like the looks of them, but most folks today seem to like the clean look without the spare present.

My 70 originally came with one and I was going to use it, but found a clean bed with out the spare mount to use.

I'm obviously a fan. I think its the look you're after. If its a retro street machine-the tire looks funky. If its a tough farm/work truck look-the tire looks right...imho.

i will jump into this one... i also have a 67 short step with side mounted spare. this one was ordered that way due to ease of access in case of a flat tire.
i had considered replacing with full fender but just might leave as is.

I like it but I don't seems like with the smaller 15" tire hanging on it just doesn't fill the space right so I've always wanted to replace with full fender. problably would help if it wasn't a long box, lots of space to fill.

Thats true. I'm rolling on 16" steelies so it helps fill the space. Also helps give it a taller stance.

My '69 lwb stepper has the side mount. Wouldn't have it any other way!

From what I understand nobody is reproducing the cut out fender and mounting bracket, so original factory parts are all you have.

Get larger diameter tires. I am running five BF Goodrich P255 70R 15's and the spare fills the fender nicely. About 1" from tire to cut out.

I'd love to see someone build a stepper street machine style with larger diameter wheels, and mount the same wheel/tire on the fender. I personally don't like the look for my truck, but I can certainly appreciate anyone that wants to retain to originality of the fender spare.

I like the no-tire fender, that is what mine is. On the Craigslist ad I thought that there was a notch for the tire because the seller took pics of everything but you couldn't see the drivers rear fender in any pic.
I wanted a muscle car look & the tire in fender wouldn't go with that.

with out the spare tire on the fender you would have to carry it around in the back of the pickup and that would loose some bed room for hauling. i have seen them mounted on the left and right , i wonder if that was an option for the step sides.

My 70 stepper came with a bed mounted spare the p.o. had made. I removed all 30 lbs of tire carrier. I will find a stock under the bed mount at a salvage yard or have to order one.

On the smooth-fender models, the spare is hung from the frame aft of the differential, forward of the rear bumper. Fans of removing the behind-the-seat tank need this space to mount a Blazer/Suburban style fuel tank.
I used to think the fender-mounted spare was mainly for 4x4 applications, but I see that was not necessarily always the case. If I wanted one like that, it would get in the way of my across-the-bed toolbox. Nor could I mount a Jerry can on the step.

if it ever comes off it's going on the wall for safe keeping or to another stepper looking to swap. I got a guy around the corner took his off in 1969 and replaced his with tool boxes they've been in his garage there whole life i'm trying to get him to put a price on them but so far no dice

I can see why people want a "smooth look" but the convenience of having the spare tire there.....to a guy like me, is priceless. I'd say a lot of it has to do with this being the truck I grew up with, because dad bought it 3 years before I came along.

Still, it's good to see I'm not alone.

I have a side mount with fender cut-out on my long step, but I don't have the mount itself. I understand they are pretty hard to find. Might have to fab something up with my non-existent welding and machining skills.

I have a stepper, and definitely would have used it, as it would go with the look I'm doing. Form follows function and I currently drive with the spare in the bed, as my 20 gallon fuel cell is in the rear, and when laid out, I'm not sure a spare would have been good back there anyway. I may revisit some stealth options using piano hinges and my raised floor for storage. Just got to see what makes the most sense.

To answer the question, I like it. It would have looked killer with my red-faced moons with chrome lips, or my upcoming purchase of billet wheels and matching spare.

Personally, I like the look of the side mount on long beds. That said, I can see how some might not like them on a short bed. I can have a tool box and still have more hauling capacity than a swb. Not sure I see a real purpose to those trucks other than vanity, but to each their own. Grilled burgers anyone?

WOW that is a gorgeous lwb stepside! I must say, I wish mine was a lwb instead of a swb but it's what dad bought.....

YOU almost never see a stepside of any kind in my part of WV. I came across an all stock, 1967 lwb, side mount stepper when I worked in NC as an exterminator in 1999. The owner planned to give it to his son; naturally I complimented him on his decision.

If I could find one and afford it, I'd be all over a '67 or '68. C/10 or C/20, 283 V8, 4 speed in floor.....oh wait....I was getting carried away!

That's exactly what I plan to do with my 72. I found the tire mount and the angle piece that runs under the bed rail. I'll probably have to fab up the other horizontal angle part. But I think an 18" Boss 338 will fill that fender notch just fine.
