OK, after looking at all these again I suggest a new crank pulley yours has seperated from the rubber mount on the inside. I see what you were hammering now. You had the pulley seated but the balancer has seperated. It's junk.

There is no way to fix this that I know of I don't think.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: PS bracket issue on '71

You can tell in the older pics that n2billet posted,... that the pulley was farther back at the time he took his picture.
The pulley has moved forward,... just like the outer ring of a SBC harmonic balancer moves forward, when it goes bad.
I think you are going to need to find a new balancer pulley combo.

Thanks for the help guys. Not to hammer this point, but what are the chances of significant damage?

The only damage would have been if it had come off.

I doubt it did any harm to the motor at all. If it had not thrown the belt then it could have wrecked the motor. It throwning the belt was a good thing.

Re: PS bracket issue on '71

Thanks again. If I go with that harmonic balancer can I go with a crank pulley that bolts up like most or do I need to stay with the one piece unit that has both? There is a wrecking yard near me that apparently has some old Chevy vans and trucks so I'm hoping there are some 250's in there.

The crank pulley should be by it's self with the other's bolted to it with 3 bolts. The balancer should have the center bolt in it to hold it to the crank shaft.
Here is my 305 after install.
There is plenty of clearance but the picture angle makes it look very close. After I took the picture I went bck out and checked it.

Re: PS bracket issue on '71

Thanks, those pics help a lot. That last pic is the exact PS/Alt mounting bracket I have so I think once the crank is back in place I will finally be good to go. The picture of those two set ups are what I was used to seeing for crankshaft pulleys. I had never seen one like mine before I did some googling yesterday.

I can switch to a setup like yours right?

I don't think the crank is "drilled and tapped" for a bolt.

That was my fear as well. I'm not sure if the link to the HB you gave will work. I'll do some digging, I appreciate the input as this is something I haven't done before.

Do you even need the "add-on" pulley?
All you are driving is the alternator and the P/S pump.

That link was for a 1971 C10 with a 250.

Not sure about the other pulley Keith. I have an O'Reiley's close, I'll stop by there today. My guess is it will need to be ordered regardless as I doubt they have one in stock.

Sorry for coming in late on the discussion (work is getting in the way)......I never pulled the balancer off while I had the truck. I went back and looked at all my pictures and it looks like it's slide forward like everyone else has said..

Re: PS bracket issue on '71

There's lots of info on the internet where people drill and tap the crank for a 7/16-20 balancer bolt.
This would also help install a new balancer with the correct installation tool.

There is also equal amounts of info abount not drilling the crank and just "hammering" on a new balancer.
(do not beat on the outer ring)

No worries, I think the problem is figured out now. I only wish it would have happened a few months ago!

Thanks, I'll ask my friend the best route to go before I pick up any parts and continue to google for info.

I don't know about the 250's but all the V-8 I have ever seen had the center bolt in them. I can't say 100% of them do but I would think they should have it.

Re: PS bracket issue on '71

Early 265's, 283's, some 307's, and even some 327's had press on balancers with no drilled hole in the crank.
Here's a good thread:

Re: PS bracket issue on '71

Got it off. The outer piece came off by me pulling by hand, that could have been nasty if the belt hadn't come off. The inner piece was tough, crows foot got it though.

So that link to the Dorman HB is the only part I need? I'm not sure how I'm going to get it on without pulling the radiator as it will need to be tapped into place since it's a press fit unit.
