PS bracket issue on '71

Background. This PS/Alt bracket was added so PS can be put on truck soon. The alternator pulley is approximately 3/8" off from the crank and fan pulleys. I've thrown 2 serpentine belts within 15 minutes now.

I am not sure what bracket this is from but there is no adjustment in a front to rear direction with it. In another thread lolife99 had recommended this bracket http://www.ebay.com/itm/194-215-230-...sories&vxp=mtr as a possible replacement.

I'm putting a pic here at his request and maybe someone can see something off but it's tough to get a good pick as the PS pump and upper radiator hose block the view. This pic is about a straight on as possible. PS is not ready to go yet and has no belt.

Re: PS bracket issue on '71

I'll see if I can get more later, my wife is off to do some photos in not in the mood for me to bug her. Looks like I'll crack a cold one and leave her the hell alone tonight.

n2billet is sending me the original mounting bracket for the alt so I can at least get it on the road until I figure out what bracket I will need for the alt/ps setup.

On the bright side, all the Christmas crap is down. Thanks for the pics, they were helpful.

Re: PS bracket issue on '71

Lolife, I want to use a PS pump like the one Malamute is using with the smaller, narrower reservoir. The pump I have now looks like the other one shown which appears to be a Saginaw. I asked the ebay seller I bought the brackets from (the link you gave), which Malamute might be considering, if they would work, since his description says the brackets use the Saginaw style, and he said they are all Saginaw, the narrower reservoir is just an earlier one. When I search online I only see them listed as a Chevy pump, or a Duralast, not Saginaw. Any info?

Malamute, does your pump have any markings on it? We'll see if it works with my brackets.

Re: PS bracket issue on '71

I have no info on the p/s pumps.
I would assume a V-8 p/s pump would also work.

Check with member teeitup.
I'm sure he would have some of the older style pumps.

The bigger/bulkier pumps are still available new.
I belive they are 73-87 style pumps.

Re: PS bracket issue on '71

For what it's worth. When I did mine I found that the spacers that go between the pump and bracket can throw alignment off.I also found that there are different offsets in the brackets.I know there are 2 offsets maybe more.Post 8 pic 2 shows the bracket I found different offsets.I assume you could get several different combinations of spacers and offsets to both align and not.The spacers are just thick flat washer looking pieces and you may not have noticed them if you didn't take the brackets and such apart to clean and paint like I did.
BTWThat is how I learned it all has to be right to align.I didn't keep thinga as organized as I should have and had to redo it to get alignment right.

Jim, I can't find any markings on that PS pump. They may be on the bottom of it and I will look once I pull it off.

FWIW, the PS pulley is in perfect alignment, it's just the alt that is the problem.

Please don't take this wrong but make sure the brackets aren't bent. I have seen good brackets that have arms sticking out that look fine until u start tighting them up.
If the alternator is off shim it forward off the bracket.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

I wasn't sure I could do that as the lower mounting point is on the block but the more I look at it, that might be possible. Unfortunately, I think in my last attempt yesterday to tighten it enough to limp back home the top nut in the alt may be stripped. I'm not sure what kind of fixed nut is on the back of it and I can't see under the bracket. I'm going to pull the alt tomorrow and leave the ps pump and bracket in place and look a little closer.

Thanks for the input

Re: PS bracket issue on '71

Well Jim, there are absolutely no markings on that PS pump. There is a number on the pulley and it says GM on the other side, would that help? Maybe Keith knows what it is, I could ask him.

As for shimming the alt, not going to happen. The bracket is fixed and you cannot shim the alternator forward. Back you could do it but not forward. I'm just going to have to run the original bracket when it gets here until I get the right bracket for both.

Let me know if you want the number from the pulley Jim but I don't think that's going to be what you need.

Re: PS bracket issue on '71

No, that's fine. Thank you though. I do appreciate it.
So, did keith swap the alternator brackets to a single unified PS/alt bracket, or did the previous one just not work with the addition of PS?

Re: PS bracket issue on '71

Yes, he swapped to a combo bracket. He was in the process of getting the PS completed and I told him if he sent all of the parts I would do it. Now that the PS pulley is out of the way I can see that the alt pulley is behind the back crank pulley by a bit.

He's sending me the original, luckily he still had it. Hopefully he sees this thread and he can shed some light on what that PS pump is so you can track one down.

V-8 brackets are totally different from the inline 6 brackets.

Thanks Keith.

Jim, I know a GM mechanic here locally, he's a walking encyclopedia. I'll take the pump over to him and see if he can tell me what it is. I was going to go over today but he's in Detroit for work. He said he'll be back next week.
