Talking Re: What type of oil do you use?

Well I just did the LS install back this past January and have been running O-Riellys synthetic 10w-30 the whole time. For the price of name brands it's, it's not worth it if you change your oil regularly like everyone says they do! Your wasting $10.00 everytime you buy brand name oil. $10.00 cheaper which is the same price as regular name brands oil. So I figured it's a good deal! I run AC filters.

$26.99:

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: What type of oil do you use?

Autozone has a special now and again on a Mobil 1 synthetic jug, and matching oil filter for $32.

Re: What type of oil do you use?

Durablend and Zddp oil additive. Preferably 10/40 in the cold, 20/50 in the heat.

I've only used 10/40 the last few years. The engine is quite fond of the 20/50, but I can't justify two oil changes a year when I only average 500-600 miles during that time span.

Usually take whatever filter is available. AC/Delco preferable.

Thinking about switching to full synthetic. The parts stores no longer carry Durablend, so order only and no deals. Any considerations using full synthetic in one of these "old" motors?

I've seen people get into flame wars over which brand of filter to use. Some guys think Fram is the worst ever, but I've been using them for decades without an oil related failure. I change my oil according to the best information, so I suspect that which brand of filter is probably pretty low in terms of worry.

Then again, back in the early '70s, I knew this hippie guy who had an old '61 Pontiac that all he did was add oil when it was low. Never learned what happened to it, as I wasn't at that job all that long. He'd had it for years and had never changed the oil. Some machinery is pretty much bullet proof.

That link will give you some good reading and help you decide. With that being said, I've used Mobil 1 oil & Mobil 1 filters for the past 15 years in everything I've had -

92 C1500 (flat tappet cam) 350 that had 263,000 miles on it when I sold it and still ran great and never had one engine issue - 5w-30

05 GMC Sierra - 5.3, currently has 148,000 miles on it and it runs like new, I pulled the valve covers at 116k to do a cam swap and the inside was like new, 5w-30.

'69 C10 - 454, has about 600 miles on fresh rebuild, used Valvoline VR1 conventional to break it in, and Mobil 0w-40 at the first oil change and will from now on.

Re: What type of oil do you use?

Stock, carb'd flat-tappet 350: Valvoline Max-Life 10-30 or 10-40 w/ZDDPlus.
Stock, carb'd flat-tappet 454: Schaeffer's 10-30 syn. blend, switched from their 15-40 on the last change and see no undesirable affects so far. Zinc additive every few changes.
Turbo 1.4L in my Cruze: Valvoline full syn. until 52,000 then switched to Schaeffer's full syn for better peace of mind in extending my OCI to 7,500 mi.
Wix, Napa, or Delco filters on everything. I've seen two 350's (one flat-tappet Q-jet, one roller Vortec) pass the 350,000 mark with a healthy, tight bottom end and little or no oil consumption on Valvoline products, so I'm pretty confident in them.

Valvoline VR-1 50K on complete top end re-build. No issues! Now if the local auto parts stores would just stock the 10-40.

Re: What type of oil do you use?

I opted for Lucas' 10w-30 Hot Rod Oil in my son's 350 crate motor. It's done fine so far.

With Purolator PureOne filter.

WOW......... I've only added Zinc one time (currently, "board advise") and the message in this weblink is DON'T USE. I'm changing the oil today. A few things I got out of this:

1. CONCLUSION: No matter what anyone else tells you, the “Ideal Lubrication Setup” for most traditional engines, is a high volume/high pressure oil pump with a thinner multi-viscosity motor oil such as 5W30.

2. If not high mileage, you don't use an additive and aren't racing, then for wear protection, 5W30 Mobil 1, API SN synthetic is a good way to go. I'm sold.

Thanks for the info.

Re: What type of oil do you use?

Royal Purple with A/C filters or Wix or Baldwin or sometimes Fram. I change the filter according to the DIC readout % of oil life remaining and run the grape juice two to three filter changes. Other gas engines that don't like RP I run Valvoline All Climate. I do use Rotella T in my Duramax.

Asking gear heads about oil brands usually starts a big fist fight.

Re: What type of oil do you use?

Anyone else remember when oil was $1 a bottle? So was a gallon of gas, a pack of cigarettes, etc. etc.

Beautiful reading. I love unbiased testing. 5w30 Mobil 1 proved it's worth in testing, so I can't discredit the info in any way shape or form. However, thousands of other oil and filter combinations used throughout the course of the gasoline engines' history have proved; the best can be best, but the line is finer than the thinnest human hair that separates at least a dozen motor oils.

That being said, I feel a 1/4 turn +- on valve lash over the course of a Gen I II SBC BBC engine's life has more of an impact on the wear of valvetrain components, than that of 90% of the motor oils tested.

Re: What type of oil do you use?

Just replaced with 5/30 Mobile 1 and a Bosch filter and she purrs like a kitten. After 20 plus years, Durablend and I are officially divorced. And sure as heck no *%*&%*% Zinc additive. Glad I only used that BS once, maybe 150 miles.

Re: What type of oil do you use?

Too much info to read at one time from the engineer.
Bottom line don't use additives.
Thinner oil is better.
IMO Ultimate Durability Quaker State 0w-20 or 5W-30 seems to be the best.
Just went to 3 stores and could not find any.
I guess I will use Mobil 1 since you can acquire it just about anywhere.
