LOL, no problem Hook'em. One of my friends told me about it and I didn't believe 'em because I only saw stuff like this at car shows, I didn't think you could actually drive around with old plates on a truck. I know when I get 'em registered and on my truck almost all of the dumbass cops around here are probably gonna pull me over when they see 'em.

Hey 72 Custom Camper, I also just realized I have 1970 Henrico County metal tag, that I guess you would have attached to the bottom of the liscence plate. Too bad I live in Hanover, but anyway it's also something my uncle gavel me with the truck.

I'd keep it. I'm trying to find a 1972 Spotsylvania county tag to put on my pickup...

Those "made" or reproduction tags can't be used in any state as a real/classic registration...All states require a real, authentic tag/tags on YOM registrations. That, and verification of number availability, is why the state lincensing authority requires a hands-on look at the tag before they let you use it as a real registration.

Also, in Kansas, they won't allow the antique tag to be restored/repainted. They photocopy it when you register it - guess you could always repaint it after it is registered and they wouldn't know.

Excellent thread here. I have a set of 1968 "Hemisfair" plates I'd like to run on my GMC. I've waited about registering them because I wasn't sure if there would be restrictions and also I'm afraid they might be stolen. None of you guys seem worried about theft so I'm just paranoid I guess.

I won the auction I was bidding on. Hope to see them next week.

TX FF - can you explain what I need to ask for at the DMV when I want to use them on my truck, have no inspections, but get to drive it more than to the fairs/shows/parades/etc?

Legally, no.

Technically, you can register it as an antique and only drive to to shows, parades, events, or if you're working on it..

I just nod my head politely, fill out the form, and assure her I understand.

After that, it's up to you. I drive mine and have never been pulled over or questioned. Officially, I tell you I only drive it to shows, or when I've been working on the vehicle.

If mister cop ever does pull me over and asks, I'm taking it to a friends house so we can work on it.

Been doing it since 1991 that way.

Hey SWBMAN, have you registered any of those tags in Oklahoma? I recently bought one on Ebay and after checking around at a couple of tag agents, they both told me that in Oklahoma you CAN NOT re-register a tag that does not belong to your vehicle.

Gene, the tag agent people generally don't know Shiite about anything they don't have on hand. What you need to do is call the Oklahoma Tax Commission (the state tag authority) and tell them the year and the tag number you have. If that number is not currently registered on ANY other vehicle in Oklahoma, taht means the tag is available. You then need to submit it to the State so they can physically inspect it. I live close enough to the OTC that it's no big deal to do that. Then, you are requesting that number/tag as an "vintage registration", which costs $21.00 annually, in addition to your normal registration. I have 1966, 1971, 1937, and 1952 tags on cars and they are all tagged with those. In addition, you get a year decal that goes on your lower left of your windshield that says you're current. The requirements are those above and that the tag must be legible and in its' original colors (repaints are OK on pre-reflective plates). A car tag can be used on a truck, but not vice versa. It must be an Oklahoma tag the same year as the build of the car.

Pretty simple, really.
