I heard that if you find a set of license plates that match the year of your truck that you can get them registered for your truck. I don't know about other states but does anyone in Texas know if this is possible? I think it would be a cool idea.

Yes, in VA it's absolutely true, mine has 1970 plates, truck plates no less, which I had actually never seen before. In VA truck plates start with a T. I'd bet it's true there too, maybe just check with your DMV.

yeah you have to goto the dmv and get a form i think it costs like 15 or 25 bucks but you never have to get plates again!

i have one plate from oklahoma that is a 68 farm truck plate, too bad i am from oregon. i bought some old plates but they dont have the year stamp on them and was able to get them transfered to my truck cause that era of truck could have had them on originally. they stroke you on the fees though. they charge you for a custom plate fee, but you dont get charged to make the plate. with new tags i think it cost me like 140 to do mine

ohio sucks in this regard, they don't see the potential to make more money. You can do it here, but only as a replacement to a historical vehicle (collector plates) and not on a daily driver.

You Texas guys are lucky, Colorado will only let you re-register an old plate if it is '34 or older.

Do I understand you right that you can't run historical plates or replacements on a daily driver in Ohio? I would save a lot of money because you only have to pay the registration fee once and not yearly like regular plates.

I know that if you buy Antique Vehicle plates here in Texas, you can't use them on a daily driver. My Dad has 'em on his '53 Buick, but they only give you one plate that you put on the back of the car. It's only for shows, parades, stuff like that.

In Virginia, you register the number on those plates as a general use plate...I did it on 3 trucks. You can drive it every day, its different that antique plates...

There are still a few officers around that don't know that you can do it so i keep a printout of the bill from when it past a few years ago in my glovebox

IIRC, you can put collector plates on the vehicle, but there is a yearly mileage cap, and a few other restrictions put on them. I wish it wasn't like that because I traded fine69 for a set of Ohio '69 truck plates, and all I can do with them is hang 'em on the garage wall. I do, however, have my truck registered as a regular car, so its cheaper than a truck.

I'm not aware of a mileage cap, however, I know you are only supposed to drive the vehicle to and from the shop for maintnance, on weekends, and to/from club meetings and parades/shows.

I run original year plates on all of my trucks in Texas. Just take the plates to the DMV and they'll do the rest.

They give you a list of stipulations about when and how you can drive the vehicle. I've been pretty much daily driving them since 1991 and never been pulled over or questioned.

It costs 55 bucks for 5 years registration too. That's a lot cheaper than normal registration fees.

Also, no yearly safety inspection is required any more either.

I have original 1970 Maryland truck plates on mine. In Maryland you have to keep the regular plates under the seat and carry 2 registration cards for each set of plates. I think I pay $27 for 2 years but I can't remember.

I run the historical plates with the model year option plates on all of my oldies. I've never had any problem or anyone asking me any questions. I've used my blue K20 to tow a trailer all over the country with its 72 Ohio plates. You do have to carry the historical plates in the vehicle with you though. You also now have to take the plates you want to use with you when you go to the license office.

I'm in the process of getting collector car plates for my ZR1 and Elcamino SS. No more freakin emissions testing.....

Pretty soon my whole fleet will be historical.....lol

I bought a "NOS" '72 Kansas Truck plate off of e-bay. It is still in the original envelope. I would like to use it when I finish my restoration. But, I'm not sure if I can since the county is different. I don't even know if Kansas would allow me to use it anyway. I live in Leavenworth (LV) County while the tag is from Pottawotomie (I have no idea if I spelled that right) County. I guess I'll worry about it when the truck is finished.

I have definately decided to get some old Texas Truck plates. Here's my dilema: from most outward appearances the truck looks like at 1971, but the the VIN shows it to be a 1969. I tend to tell most people that it is a 1971, because I would get arguments from some if I called it a 1969 with the grill that is on it. Can/should I put 1971 plates or 1969 plates on it. Maybe Tx Firefighter will have the answer to whether or not the DMV requires the plate year to match the VIN.

Here in Missouri I have "Year of manufacture" tag's all my 67-72 trucks and my Camaro. One small fee ($27.50), and you are done for life! It's the best thing have ever seen!!!

Most states that allow Year Of Manufacture (YOM) plates/tags permit only limited use of the vehicle and can't be used as a daily driver; you just have to check with your licensing authority. In Oklahoma, we've been a one-tag state since 1938, and singles are easy to find, for the most part. Older cars can get by with a YOM single, as well. Here, you have to carry your normal plate in the vehicle and pay both the regular registration fee and the vintage tag fee annually, which together comes out to $42.00 ($21.00 each). Oklahoma government never met a fee or tax it didn't like! Wish we could register-for-life for $55.00!!! The vintage tag can NOT be a number currently registered on any other vehicle registered in OK, and the vintage tag must be in good or better condition. There is a yearly sticker that goes in the lower left windshield that signifies your YOM tag is legal for the road.

I'll soon have the '72, the '71, '66, '52, and the '37 all YOM tagged (at $42.00 each/year = $210.00 annually to run classic tags!!! OK state government is full of

, like any other bureaucratic machine!

Hey thanks for the info Tx. I've had hell finding a nice set of these. I found a NOS set on ebay so I bid around 35 on 'em and it went for almost $50. The ones I got were $20.41 shipped. They're in awesome shape, there's just some paint worn off where they were bolted on.
