Re: '62 2.5? ton
I probably should have mentioned that 2 years ago my grandpa acquired a hearse with a 500 in it. I'm gonna try and see if I can have the engine out of it for free or cheep.

Re: '62 2.5? ton
gotcha - if you got the motor go for it - I would still go through all the steps I listed in my original post, just instead of the I6 apply the steps to the 500

Re: '62 2.5? ton
Hey man sounds like a cool project! I mowed lawns and paid for my 62 stepside when i was 13, and have had it for 10 years, so its pretty cool! You were talking about maybe putting on a tilt frontend?? Believe me they are cool! i bought mine from usbodysource.com, you should check it out they have some cool stuff. great project keep up the good work.

Re: '62 2.5? ton
I like your ideas of being different. If you've got the caddy motor then great. But, if you want something different that will make a ton of torque and is cheap, look for a Ford 460. Ya, ya, I know, it's that "F" word. But for some reason, the 460's seem to be somewhat unloved and tend to sell cheaper than any 454 (or 502 if you're really lucky).

Re: '62 2.5? ton
I asked my grandpa about the hearse and he said he sold it a couple of weeks ago.
Now I'm thinking 12V Cummins with all the "free" mods done. keep the current trans and add a the ranger OD unit I posted above. Or a TH400 and an OD unit. Another cool idea I had, I mentioned using it at the FFA's goat farm we have and I got to thinking, the roof is a little low and I think the bed would hit when you raise it up so to solve that problem, do a simple 4 link and some HD bags to lower it when backing into the barn.

Re: '62 2.5? ton
The Cummins would most likely be way better than the other engine choices. Give that rig the torque it deserves!

Re: '62 2.5? ton
There was a Detroit Diesel 4 -53 available in 1962 as an extra cost option, that would run forever.

Re: '62 2.5? ton
IMO a 4-53 may run forever but would be way under powered in something this big. It may have been a bad ass back in the day but by todays standards and mine, I think the 12v is a better choice.

Re: '62 2.5? ton
Well, if you go with the Cummins, you can always paint it Detroit Diesel green!

Re: '62 2.5? ton
I was thinking more along the lines of Cummins beige.
