'62 2 ton
Well, let me start off by saying I'm 14, and a freshman in high school, and this truck will most likely be used for my senior project.
Its a 1962 Chevy C60 (these are 2.5 ton right?) with a straight 6 and a Clark? 5 speed and a 2 spd rear axle. It doesnt have breaks and the axle doesnt shift. (its runs on vacuum, so, maybe a line is unhooked/rotted?) so its not drivable right now. but the best part is, i paid $100 for it and just had to drag it out of the holler it had been sitting in for about 10 years. and i only have another $100 in it. my plans are: Engine/drive train: first things first, POWER STEERING! sticking with the straight 6. except its getting a bigger one......when i get the money of course (read: CUMMINS) probably keep the 5 spd thats in it. keeping the 2spd axle Exterior: Im thinking red and white 2 tone. Black steel flat bed w/ built in goose neck. Interior: probably painting the dash white full autometer gauges cloth bench seat. or maybe a 20/60/20 (a bench with captains chair backs and a folding console in the middle.) Custom Stuff: thinking about grafting another 62 cab onto the back and making it a crew cab. tilt nose? (still iffy, leaning twards no on that one though) yeah i know so, this is the only one i have right now. and its about 2 years old. like the mountain dew bottle gas cap? thats rat rod material right there lol Also, can anyone tell me what transmission this is if i show your the shift pattern? its really funky. ^^pic credit goes to 1969 GMC P.S. sense im 14 and dont have a job, i probably wont be doing much to this until around this summer. -Jake Last edited by 62 C60; 01-07-2008 at 12:37 PM. |

Re: '62 2.5? ton
I might suggest looking for an older 1 ton frame. It will ride alot better, you can keep the 2ton look, and not be ridiculed at the local teen hangouts.I found an 84 1ton g30 box van with 49,000 miles for $300.00 P/S, P/B, A/C. I scrapped the box and am putting my 65 3/4 ton cab and doghouse onto it for my company shop truck. Good deals are out there, and you have time. Good luck whichever way you decide to go. Jerry

I'm not too concerned about the ride because I am also building a 4x4 trail truck so this will be my tow rig. Im not worried about being made fun of when I drive this, either, as it will not be a DD. I have a 93 full size blazer for that. |

Re: '62 2.5? ton
I've been thinking about building the engine that is in this truck now. But i can't find anyone who sells performance parts for these old straight 6's. Does anyone know of some websites I can check out and get some prices?

Re: '62 2.5? ton
Ebay might turn up an Offenhouser 4bbl intake, and DIY header kits only cost a little more than a header that is premade

I planned on making my own headers. And I may attempt a 4bbl intake. But, I'm looking more towards internal stuff. Like, bigger pistons, a more aggressive cam, and a stroker crank if anyone makes one.
I'm comfortable doing head work. (3 angle, port & polish, ect.) I've had plenty of practice with this on various four wheelers and dirt bikes I used to have. |

Re: '62 2.5? ton
I would say first you need to confirm which I6 you have. If it's the original engine I'd guess it's a 235, which will limit the selection of performance parts. One place to check would be Clifford Performance, for an intake, valve cover, and possibly a header. For a cam you might check with Isky....they've been making cams since I6's were popular back in the 50's and 60's. As for the rest I'm not sure, I'd have to think about it for a while since I'm not really into the I6's. Try posting in the engine forum of this board. I remember seeing a member on here that appears to be into I6's....might find him over there.
As for the tranny, you've probably got the same one I have in my '63 C60 and I was thinking it was a Spicer....I'd have to look to be sure. Good luck on your project....should be cool when you're done. It's good to see someone your age interested in tackling a project of this size.

Assumption is the mother of all screwups........the numbers are stamped into it, you just need to find them. Most all numbers can be found in a google search if put in properly. That is how I find parts for mine and my customers' rides. There are many decoder sites and if you need help, let me know, or give me the numbers when you find them, and I have a carb rebuild book at my shop with all the manufacturer numbers and current availability for parts. Just let me know and I will be glad to help. Jerry

Re: '62 2.5? ton
I took some better pics today.
I don't know if this truck was orignaly white, red, green, or rust? Drivers side Passenger side Interior. That new car smell has been replaced with mouse urine. It stanks somethin awful. Believe it or not, this has only rolled over once. 169,484 original miles.

Re: '62 2.5? ton
Heres some pics of the engine compartment. The engine mounts are straight across so that rules out a 292.
^Those numbers are- 3838350 and under it it says GM 3. (I think thats what it said?)

Oh believe me, its definitely no rocket. Last time I drove it it took almost a 1/4 mile to get up to 45 mph.

Re: '62 2.5? ton
Jasper rebuild means that motor comes from Jasper Motors out of Jasper, Indiana. It is most likely stock as much of their rebuilds are. Also a good site to go to for all things I6 is Stovebolt.com Those guys should be able to answer all your motor questions including performance parts. Best of luck!

Re: '62 2.5? ton
Jake, I ran your casting number through the list at Inliners.org (http://inliners.org/casting/numbers.html), but I didn't find it. I can say (as an old inliner myself) that you're not dealing with the "newer" 194/230/250/292. You've got either a 235 or a 261. Look for more casting numbers on the side of the block near to the distributor.
Looks like a neat project, though. I wish I had the space for something that size. Good luck, Greg Oh, and have a look at http://www.patricksantiquecars.com/chevrolet.htm Last edited by greg64; 01-07-2008 at 09:35 AM. |

K10- Where are you at in Southern, Indiana? I could use a set of front fenders and a hood. Of course, I have to get the money first. There is a guy about 6 miles from my house that has a BUNCH of old Chevys in his yard/field. He has a 61 truck like mine sitting right by the road and it looks to have no rust. I may try and talk him out of it. But, I have no clue what it is. all I know is, its a 61 C+C and it says Viking on the fender.

Re: '62 2.5? ton
I just went out and checked the numbers again. and they are 3836850. not 3838350. I googled the new number and from THIS site, I found out that it is a 261.

Re: '62 2.5? ton
Linton eh? I'm down around there frequently. My grandparents have a 300 acre farm right outside Worthington.
I think he has 2 or 3. I'll take some pics next time I drive by there. The only problem is, there is all these trucks and cars sitting out there and there is a house trailer right next to them, that I dont think he lives in though. But for the past 9 years we have lived here, every time you drive by the place, if you look in the window of the room closest to the road, there is a single light hanging form the ceiling and I have never seen it off.

So, I just got the trial version of photoshop and was playing around with it. And came up with a general idea.
