Re: '72 Cheyenne Super SWB BB is it worth $2800? What do you think? Pics

Sure that truck is kinda rough, but pull one like it out of barn or garage you would pay 28K!!. Thats the kind of project for deep pockets. And sounds like theres a few on here would grab it quick.

Someone please let me know how you can tell if one of these trucks has a #'s matching engine when there is no vin #stampped on the block.

I know the is a 3 digit suffix like LHM or something and a date, but I have 3 72 402's blocks in my shop with the same suffix and a simular date. It seems like any of these blocks could pass as the original engine if you wanted to pass it off that way.

Re: '72 Cheyenne Super SWB BB is it worth $2800? What do you think? Pics

AHHHH you guys are killing me putting thoughts of this completely restored in my head. It is a rare truck and it even has to be my fav color combo green/white. If anyone really wants it pm/call me or I may just change my mind and go get it. Another reason it may or may not sell is that its 1 hr away from SA TX. in a small town. I do wonder how many Cheyenne Super SWB BB Fleetside trucks did GM make? UGH decisions, decisions, I truly am 50% on this one either way. BTW the bed is gone, rusted holes in both front corners, tailgate bad/gone with holes. Pass bed side ok, drivers side with dent. I even bought a 1950's Texaco gas pump today for the game room or garage to offset the truck. Nice classic pump in great shape and good price. UGH back to the truck thinking BTW guys I do have more pics, not great because of my camera phone, but it does show more areas.

You'll never talk him down, he's got his brain in a twist over this truck. It wil likely rot in his yard.

Sounds to me like you already decided and have the last minute trying to talk yourself out of it disease. As many others have stated there is great posibilities in this truck and even if you were to get it and sit on the project for a few months I am sure someone on here would gladly take it off of your hands. If this is the kind of thing you want to do then go for it I would hate to see you kicking yourself a few years down the road.

Look, half of it is there, and the other half you can see needs to be replaced. No seat, no bed. Hello. Let's get real. It's a shortbed truck. I haven't seen the SPID (which can be duplicated rather cheaply). This is coming from a guy who paid a lot for a '67 CST. From the pictures, I'm not feeling it. And let's face it, that's a big part of our attraction towards these trucks. If it doesn't have the heart, the soul showing through, then I'm sorry, but move on.

Without the build sheet there is no way to verify that it is a big block truck, and anyone who wants can build thier own big block short wheel base cheyenne super. SPID Labels can be easily reproduced and for the right money they can be reproduce accurately

Re: '72 Cheyenne Super SWB BB is it worth $2800? What do you think? Pics

I love these trucks, but I would not regret passing on this one... I realize I'm spoiled living in socal with plenty of rust free trucks to be had, but that's barely a parts rig out here...

Since I'm not a numbers matching freak, I'd pass the opportunity along to someone else and be glad it's not my project. As was stated earlier, you can build one from a much better starting platform and be money and miles ahead.

But it would be cool to see a "lucky" board member with deeper pockets than mine pick this up and start a build thread... you'd basically be building a new truck around a glove box door and a vin tag.

Re: '72 Cheyenne Super SWB BB is it worth $2800? What do you think? Pics

The only way I would entertain a project of this magnitude would be to first buy the BB truck as reasonably as possible. Next I would patiently watch for an affordable excellent/restored small-block Green/White Cheyenne with air. I would then restore the critical BB parts and use the restored small block truck to provide the rust free parts as well as interior, suspension, A/C, etc. I am confident the total cost and the build time would be much less than beginning to replace things item by item. The remaining parts could then be sold. You would end up with a fantastic, documented BB Cheyenne Super.

Truck - $2,500
Engine, Trans, Frame Rebuild - $3,500
SWB Small-block Cheyenne - $13,000
Miscellaneous body/floor work - $2,000
Miscellaneous Parts (exhaust, belts, air-cleaner, HD Front springs, etc.) $1,000
Assembly - Lots of hours and beer
Sell small block parts - $1,200
Total Estimated Project - $20,800
SWB Cheyenne Super BB, A/C, tilt - Priceless!

The partial vin should be stamped on the right front deck just in front of the head as on just about every other GM vehicle built back then.

But it's not stamped on truck engines right?

Re: '72 Cheyenne Super SWB BB is it worth $2800? What do you think? Pics

This is off the original subject, but my truck does not have any portion of the VIN stamped on the pad. There is a 3-digit code (TLM) and a julian date/year showing engine production date. The build sheet shows the engine code as well as the VEHICLE production date. I believe the best evidence of originality would be the engine code on the build sheet matching the stamped code as well as the engine production date being slightly before (mine is 14 days before) vehicle assembly date. Obviously the casting # must also be correct.

On the Chevrolet cars they switched the VIN stamp to the pad down by the oil filter (they put the alternator in the way), part way through the '69 model year I believe...be sure and check there...

I called the guy and talked with him. Sounds like a pretty rotted out truck, but if you want a 72 SWB Super, can't be too picky. He has some lookers coming this weekend. We will see what happens.

Re: '72 Cheyenne Super SWB BB is it worth $2800? What do you think? Pics

I'm assuming its a factory correct truck, no one was faking TRUCKS long enough ago to get this much rust, wear, missing pieces on it for this to be a fake.
Now... just to clarify my thoughts towards this... I wouldn't give anymore than $500-$600 for this truck if
A) it was not a Cheyenne Super
B) it were missing the BB or not a BB truck
C) it were not a factory Shortbox truck

I paid $600 for my '67 CST small window longbox AC PS PB TH400 Buddy-Bucket 327 4bbl truck...
it is missing the motor, but... $600 was still crazy for this rusty missing motor longbox back in 1998... now the seat alone it almost worth that.
Once I make it a shortbox and build a year correct block 327... I will be happy with my "next project" and don't regret the $600 abit.
