Re: The 49' is home !
New carb works pretty good ! Fired it up tonight and it came to life with very little drama. Idled much lower than the Rochester but still kinda high.
Pulled on the gas pedal back (needs some lube/adj.?)and man it idled pretty low and ran smooth considering what its been through in the last number of years. Set of plugs and it'll purr ! Thats what I am hoping for. Did have some slight seepage at one of my new fittings, easy fix. Billetproof next year

Recharging the battery now. My boy got to see his 1st carb backfire. He was impressed Gotta thank nickp51chevy who went out of his way(with wife and child) to deliver me some great stuff. Seems I may be checking out that water pump sooner than later as mine seems to be leaking. Had to pop a wheel in a tire just for fun. Now the big question what color to paint the wheels ? My boy (almost 13) says blue like Oklahoma City Thunder. Growing up with the Sonics I can't go there. My wife says black but before she was saying silver. Nick says leave em white but I think maybe that'd be too much white. I think maybe a cream 50's style ? Ideas welcome !

Doesn't your son live in Portland now? How about black, with white, red, and silver pinstripes? Make your wife and I both happy!

You're right about the white; that is a bit too much. A cream or a somewhat darker tan would look good. Have you thought about red? Just a thought. My F-I-L says that you need to have at least 3 colors on any hot rod. I don't know why but it does seem to make sense.

Re: The 49' is home !
Like docrock said, go to Lowes, they have lots of "decorator" colors in the Rustoleum line. Try and stay away from the Disney and Martha Steward lines, I am always amazed at some of the colors my wife brings home for her projects.

Re: The 49' is home !
Might try a can of espresso. Worth a try. So Nick told me that a local tire shop
will blast/powdercoat wheels for 30$ ea. dang good deal. Had my driver at work confirm it. Still probably just bomb can them for now. Could always fall back on spun disc I have. Not sure I like ? Did get it started and drove it in front of my shop so I can figure out the brakes. Looks good but thinking the RR cyl is seized. Had to feather the clutch as a brake while it was rolling backwards toward the shop. Moving is more important than stopping. Now it sits in front of the shop. My neighbors must be so proud !

Re: The 49' is home !
Its not just that I disagree.... Its that I vehemently disagree. If you can't stop and steer I question the wisdom of moving at all!
I can see moving enough to confirm the other systems work, but beyond that if they don't its time to stop! Please tell me Brian that you left the smiley face off!

It was up against a small hillside. Now I can go through the brake system. It won't leave my yard (except maybe my private road) till I trust the brakes. I learned early (teen years) in my 66 Barracuda being pulled by a chain and only the e-brake to control it, not having brakes SUCKS !

No brakes will improve your body work skills.

Brad, Brian.... Brakes, no brakes.... what difference does it make?
I was thinking about my friend Brian this morning who seems to have disappeared from the face of the earth. Guess I confused my typing fingers too....

Re: The 49' is home !
OrrieG lots of bodywork planned, I'm just glad I did not smack into my shop

Steve "what difference does it make?" I try that line or something close when my wife tells me about her day and I'll pop off with....... "what does that have to do with picking out a color for the 49's wheels?" I'm lucky she has a great sense of humor ! Work is slow, been looking around for ideas on how to get by, but get by safely re: brakes. Not ready to swap to disc, just yet. I'm on the cheap but also like the idea of a dual master. $99 for a bracket "kit" Nah ! I'll make one. For now, today (always subject to change) I'm thinking run newer MC and keep the hucks with new cylinders. Of course this means new lines and hoses. That should get me safe. We'll see !

Re: The 49' is home !
Picked a color (when I should be working on the brakes) Turned out I like the color but the finish did not work real good but thats o.k keeps the "rough" look going. Its Rustoleum Hammertone (Hammerite rip off) brown.
So now it looks less like a pile I just drug home. O.K. who am I kidding it looks just like a pile I drug home and put nicer tires and wheels on it. Not 100% sold on the whitewalls but its much much easier to mount a tire by hand than it is to dismount. So for now it stays whites out.

Re: The 49' is home !
We'll my son left for a month east coast vacation with his mom so I toyed with the 49 a little later in the day. Removed the gas tank, very rusty looking gas/water nasty stuff. Huge dent in the tank so I don't plan on reusing it.
Time to match something up.

Re: The 49' is home !
Got my rear wheel cylinder kits today. I'll go through those then move to the master and see if its rebuildable.
Funny thing when pulling apart the LR cyl. it had 1, 1&3/16th cup and 1 1&1/4 cup ? never seen that before. If the master is questionable it will be time to upgrade. Know soon. Still looking/thinking about gas tank options. JC repo tank just too much right now.
