I've got the best of both worlds ...... an in-dash CD player with the looks of a poor man's truck

Hmmmm.... shall we start a "Dash Hacker's Club"??

wow! now thats a good idea!!

I highly doubt they'd work in the stock hole...and my guess is they'll stick with the current "DIN" or whatever it's called for quite a while. Plenty of space in the specification for stuff like, oh, a hard drive-based MP3 player, fun stuff like that...

You can still buy a Kenwood "shaft" radio that supports a 10 disc changer. No cut, looks great. I think the Kenwood number is 3006, but you may try the Crutchfield Catalouge.. Its the exact same radio that Custom Sounds advertises but you can do the radio for around $170 and the 10 disc fotr under $200.. A much better deal. I bought mine at a local stereo shop in Chico Calif. Sounds great!.. The guy before me hacked the doors so I dont feel bad

Is this any better or do I still need a lesson on how to upload these pics. Basically I made my own stereo case that it mounts inside of and mounted it to the bottom of the dash under the ignition bezel. Its easy to get at while driving and low enough that it doesnt attract attention from passer bys. Kept my original stereo up top cause it just looked so damn good up there lol

I think even this deck requires some nibbling on the inside edges of the stock shaft holes. The stock radio shaft spacing is MUCH wider than modern radios... and even though modern radios usually have adjustable shafts, I don't think they adjust that far out without at least some filing on the holes.

Does filing equal hacking?

Kenwood makes one that is a direct replacement for our trucks, knobs and all. It looks alot like the old face/knobs but has all the new features of the current radios. I have a friend that put one in (I don't have one as of yet) and other than wiring, it was a great fit.

Hackers is a moniker you bestowed upon yourselves. Judging from the creativity and quality of work you've shown and described, it certainly does not fit. I'd prefer to define your ilk as "misguided metal artists". But then again, I look at a Picasso and think "WTF? Three boobs and one eye!"

Kenneth if you prefer, you can be the "Butcher of Dashboard", or "Sawz-All Ali".

seanh71, you should learn to read. Those tools can be dangerous when used improperly!

Your're to new to this board to know this, but there is a former member Fast68 whose torch and sawz-all skills were legendary.

In the "old days" I was known by many names (yes, some of those names too ). I was "The King of Vinyl," "Doctor Hackenstein," "Bass Mechanic," "Mister Hot Glue," and "Hey You." I've done more sheetmetal cutting on cars than you can imagine. I've cut roofs, floors, frames, whatever. It's just sheetmetal

Mine was already cut when I got it, but I probably would have cut it myself. I enjoy the old styling and ease to work on, but want as many modern ammenities as possible .

Look this can be summed up with a little reasoning!!! If you are going for a fully 110% restored truck than dont cut you dash. If you are staying a little stock do what you want. if you are going wild cut away. Guys ther is no need to get heated about this we are here for one reason our trucks!!!!!!! that is why we all joined this board. I love to change the looks of my truck but still keep the body lines. Just rember it is your Truck do to it what you like except paint it pink lol
Keeping the peace

dmurphy68 I agree with you, my opposition to cutting a dash is just good ribbing its none of my business what anyone does with their truck, but the more that get cut the rarer mine gets, ok I'm still kidding LOL I might get one of those factory looking kenwoods they look good

Who's getting upset? If you're referring to the good natured barbs between XXL and I, it's all in fun. Can't speak for Kenneth but I'd hope he'd agree.

My comment to seanh71 was in jest too. That's why all the big grins

DMurphy68, I appreciate your concern but I don't see where there's been any pi$$ing matches going on.

Sorry if anybody misunderstood any of my comments.

Good entertaining thread. Time to let it run it's course though. In summary:

1. Approx 60 percent would not cut their dash for whatever reason. This percentage has been consistent for the 4 or so days this topic has been bantered about. (I win, I win! :p - JUST KIDDING )

2. EVERYBODY agrees it's up to the individual. Amen to that.

3. The thread was started for entertainment purposes as well as to see what other's have done when presented with the option. There was never any intent to make this a serious dillema or appear snobbish or superior when making the dreaded cut or not to cut decision.

4. A few people misinterpreted the spirit of the thread and somehow got the message that this was intended as critism of their choice to modify the stock appearance. It was not. An opinion is just an opinion, not a condemnation. I reviewed each comment made by those who would not cut and could not find one that even hinted in that direction ( and remember, , indicates a comment intended to be humorous).

5. Individuality is a wonderful quality that is encouraged by the freedoms out countries enjoy.

Thanks to everybody!

If anything had been modified by the previous owners of my truck, I'd have made the cut. Since it was still pretty much bone stock looking, I've kept that appearance. But I like current conveniences and technology, so the new 350 and 5 speed are in, with HEI and anyhting else I need to make it a reliable everyday truck. If I hadn't found a custom autosound USA-6 at the Portland swap meet for $45, I wouldn't have one. They are too proud of their product.

That being said, it's your damn truck. The General got his money decades ago. If it feels right - go for it.
