Re: Windshield installation instructions needed

One thing I forgot to mention, and I didn't see anyone else post this. Measure the bottom of the glass and mark the center point. Find the place on the rubber where the molded seam is and line it up with the center mark on the glass when you put the rubber on. This way the seam is centered, and you'll have a mark to make sure the trim connectors are centered as well.

Re: Windshield installation instructions needed

Finished installing my windshield today.
The hardest part for me with starting at the bottom, was getting the upper outer lip right under the roof visor to lay out nice.
If I had to do it again, I will probably try putting the top in first like sigshooter did his.

Re: Windshield installation instructions needed

The 67-72's are definately easier, even with the trim, but the trim on 64-66 adds another level of frustration-took an hour & half to get mine in. The trim doesn't always want to stay in place as you work the windshield in. Heavy taping w/masking tape is a big help.

Re: Windshield installation instructions needed

After spending 3 hours installing my old windshield I had 2 inches of fold over to go and gave it a thump, Everyone else ran from the garage when they saw the crack. Called my local glass guy and the NEXT DAY he was there with a brand new windshield and installed it too for $200 TOTAL!!!! PICK YOUR BATTLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dumb question, which way does the gasket go on ? Deep grove to the front or rear of the windshield ? Safelite guy came out today, tried it both ways and couldnt get it to fit, ripped a bunch of chunks out of the new gasket.

Here's a drawing from the 1960 Chevy Shop Manual that should help. The outside face of the seal is to the left:

start at the top and use a hook tool to help the rubber over the pinch weld when he gets to the bottom..... I did and it took ten minutes

Started at the top used 3 people and the hook tool and it all but fell into place, everything else I tried was a disaster!

Learned the hard way

Dont forget all the failures that come before success.

Thomas Edison said when interviewed That he did not feel failure when inventing the light bulb, but merely found over 9,000 ways that the light bulb will definetly not work.

I felt like Edison, finding out ways not to install the windshield

Hey, sigshooter and LostMy65, I'm about ready to attempt the windshield job. How did yours hold up with no sealant in the rain. We get a lot of hard rain up here in WA and I don't want any leaks.

I haven't taken mine out in the rain yet.
Not sure when I might.

Re: Windshield installation instructions needed

FWIW - my first replacement windshield went in dry and never leaked. The 2nd & 3rd had sealant. The 2nd leaked like a sieve, the 3rd had no leaks at all. When I have it done again to install the stainless trim it will be without sealant.

Re: Windshield installation instructions needed

I'm going to go without any sealant also. Right now I'm trying to get the rubber onto the windshield. I've got it taped in about 20 spots overnight, but I have a feeling as soon as I pull the tape it will flop right off again. A lot tighter fit than what I was expecting. After I get it to stay put on the glass I need to get the stainless trim pieces into their groove and then the rope.

I just did one , left the tape on it and pulled it off as we went , used plenty of soapy water in a spray bottle when we pulled the pull string it ripped through the tape and with the tape being wet it pulled right out.

After I got the rubber all taped secure to the glass, I put it next to the heater in the house and let it set for a day to allow it to take shape.

Got the rubber on the glass and have it taped up real good. Will let it sit in the heat for a while so I can work on polishing the stainless window trim.
