Windshield installation instructions needed

on my 65 plain rubber,,,

I broke my last one last weekend.
Do I start at the top work down to the sides and bottom last, or
start at the bottom and work to the top?

last weekend I started at the bottom and the top kept hitting the overhang of the cab.

Gonna try again tomorrow need advice from guys that have done it

This is my generic glass installation instructions.

I assume you have a new gasket.

Get a piece of rope 1/4" or a little smaller diameter. I prefer nylon. Make sure it is long enough to go all the way around the glass plus a couple feet extra.

Install the gasket on the glass. Tuck the rope in the grove around the outside of the gasket where the pinch weld will sit.

Start and end the rope in the middle of the bottom of the glass with the extra rope on both ends.

Loosely tie the rope ends together to keep them from falling out.

Use some kind of non silicon lubricant and spray on the inside of the rubber.

With someone else holding the glass on the outside. Start by sitting the glass down on the bottom pinch weld. If I remember right we set it like it was laying in the hole. Then we worked the lower lip over the pinch weld and continued around the rest.

If you have a 90 degree pick tool would be helpful picking at the rubber to get it over the pinch weld. Be gentle with the pick or you could tear the rubber or crack the glass.

Start pulling the rope one at a time a little at a time and have the helper push down a little.

It should go pretty easy until the corners. Take your time and work it slowly. Be careful and pay attention to the other end of the rope while pulling. It's possible to pull the other end of the rope into the rubber where it can't be reached.

Repeat to the next corners. Your home free then after the last 2 corners.

Pull the remainder of the rope a little at a time along the top until your done.

Remember to have the helper bump lightly on the glass with the palm of the hand at the area you are trying pull the rope it helps a little.

Good luck. The back glass is easy compared to the windshield. If you have a hard time with the back glass don't even attempt the windshield. JMHO

I’m certainly interesting in the answer to this question as well since I want to install the stainless trim around my windshield using a new gasket this coming summer. Although I’ve installed roughly a dozen windshields starting back in the mid-sixties, the first installation attempt on my 1960 was my first failure. I was using was the original glass and it had a few small rock chips but was otherwise in good shape. I wanted to see how difficult it was going to be, as a reference for when I did install a new windshield.

I had a hard time even getting started. After the gasket was assembled to the glass, rope installed and taped in place, attempting to place the lower edge on the pinch weld caused the top of the glass/gasket to run directly into the overhang. It didn’t seem to matter how much of the gasket I got over the pinch weld, I could never get the glass to drop low enough to clear the overhang. So I pulled it back off and tried to lay it flat against the cavity. Being a wrap around windshield, the rear corners ran into the windshield opening. The bottom of the gasket was over an inch away from the pinch weld, so it was impossible to start any portion of the lower seal.

Back to the original concept, the lower gasket was again rested on the bottom of the cavity and within minutes of starting the gasket over the pinch weld the windshield split right up the center at one of the existing rock chips and that was that.

It took three guys to install the new replacement windshield. Unfortunately I was at work that day. So I didn’t get to watch how they got started. I wanted my wife to video tape the process but they wouldn’t permit it.

Should these windshields be started at the top instead of the bottom? Is there something obvious that's being missed?

Alan's advise is spot on, and I'll add that's you'll want to "cup" your hand when bumping the glass- it forms an air cushion under your hand. You don't want to hit with just your palm, use your whole cupped hand to spread the load out. Also stay away from the edges by around 6" to keep from cracking the glass. Another thing that helps is to have the pinch weld squeaky clean so the rubber lip can flip over easier. If its not warm out you can throw the rubber in the oven or clothes drier, just don't let the wife catch you!! We spray the pinch weld and rubber down with glass cleaner to help lubricate the rubber so it can seat easier.

I took the windshield out of my 62. It was cracked in a few places when I bought the truck. It was not easy coming out. I had safelite install the new one. Even with two guys, who weren't amateurs, and me helping, it was rough going in. Same experince as above, in that when we put the bottom in first, the top hit the roof overhang. Ended up going in top first. We got it in, although it is not perfect. One bottom corner is a little pulled away from the frame. I don't know if this is because the windshield is not centered, if the replacemet glass is a little off, the rubber gasket a little small, or a combination of all. I imagine that the 60-63 trucks are a little more complicated thanthe 64-66.

I agree with the above posts used Dawn dish soap and a little water for the lube. Take your time and bump it lightly and it will be fine.

For what it's worth, the cost of my windshield installed by safelight was less than any advertised price I have seen for the windshield alone as offered by the major vendors. Plus they came to my house to do it. The installers were just local guys. They seemed knowledgable. The rubber I got from one of the vendors - it is probably crap. I can't say if the windshield is any better or worse than he others out there. And there is a lifetime guarantee.

My instructions are : pick up the phonebook, open the yellow pages to the glass section, pick up the phone and dial a number in there.

If this helps , Three guys are ideal but not always a option .On wrap around windshields and back lite/glass use silicon spray for the pinchweld .Sometimes I tape the rubber/gasket to the glass in a few spots. Then when I rope it ,I rope from the top but off to one side lets say drivers side, not in the center. When I pull the rope I would pull rope across to the pass side. Now going around pass corner I stop about halfway around first top corner. Then I go to the other end of the rope and pull it to about the same spot or a little more as I did on the other side . This helps to keep the glass centered. Now pull the pass side rope a little more and then back to drivers side ,and so on tell its in. I like to use 1/4 or sightly bigger rope because you will almost never rip the rubber and if you have a hook tool and a windshield setting tool is always a good thing.I've used this technique and it works well . I've even done it by myself after taping the glass to the the car,But not advised for the novice. as far as slapping the glass slightly cupped is best. One more thing the higher quality glass and gasket always fits best !

How about the use of sealer during the install? The factory shop manual says to apply multiple stages of sealer all over the place. The first replacement windshield in my truck was installed with no sealant of any kind and it never leaked. The second windshield had lots of sealer and it leaked badly. The current (3rd) windshield has a few small areas of sealer between the glass and the gasket, and it also does not leak.

Any recommendations?

I use 3M auto bedding & glazing compound along the top and down the sides. Makes a mess but wipes off easily.

The old timer's around here may remember the strip calking called dum dum ,It was like plumbers putty . I'm not sure if its still around but you could shove it in a loose spot between the glass and gasket usually in a corner to seal a leak. Or you can use a butyl sealant but can be messy, both work . oh and the old timer's comment no disrespect intended .

The more lubricant...the easier these go...
And the compound that 64fleetside mentioned doubles as a great lube while it's still wet....don't skimp on it and don't let it start to flash...(cure/set).

seal on the glass. Got it all taped up to allow it time to conform to shape.

Are you installing stainless trim or a plain rubber gasket. Also where did you buy your gasket?

Just plain rubber gasket.
I got it local from Dan's Classic Auto.
The brand is Precision.
