Re: NV4500/NP205 question (s)
The round pattern Np205 that had Th400 were short inputs, the Np205 that had 4l80E had long input. The short input will bolt up and yes the rear tail housing has to be notched for the shift rails.

Re: NV4500/NP205 question (s)
All round pattern 205s came stock with long inputs. It was done to streamline the manufacturing so one input was used for all trannys. The shorts came in the racetrack 205s behind th400s only. The inputs are interchangeable.

Re: NV4500/NP205 question (s)
Believe me, I've been down this road and have done extensive research plus I have access to a GM 4x4 salvage yard with just about every single model and year of GM. So the round NP205 comes with a short 32 spl if behind a th400 (86+) and long 32 spl if behind a SM465 (86+) using either input shaft will require notching the tail housing. I am currently running a 6 bolt round NP205, long 32spl, AA spacer and had to notch the tail housing for rail clearance. You also mention using the guts of an older ( 8 track?) NP205. this is not a good idea IMO. because the older np205's have a smaller bore input shaft bearing plus it is not sealed i.e. same oil needed in the T/C as the trans. plus the older NP205's have 10 spl front and rear output shafts, if you're running a big power plant diesel or 454 the shafts will not last long. as minimum you need the rear output to be a 32spl and the front 30spl (standard in 6 bolt 32 spl GM np205's). If your doing hard core off road with execsive driveline angles and 40"+ tires then you need the 32spl front input shaft from a ford or dodge NP205. And don't forget that you will need the bracket to mount the T/C shifter as the NV4500 does not have a mounting boss.

I'll have to check the rear outputs tomorrow. I dont think they are 10 spline but I would generally agree. I'm only running a vortec 383 with pro-flo injection. I'm not expecting monster shaft breaking torque. 33 or 35 inch tires (2-3 inch lift). As for the shifter mounts, I dont know what I need yet, but it's getting "twin sticked" if that makes any difference. This is all new to me, so until I start bolting it all together in a few weeks, I'm not sure what I'll need. Last edited by SunSoaked; 11-30-2012 at 11:27 PM. |

Re: NV4500/NP205 question (s)
Hi there, if you're running a round NP205 with 32spl input then your good this is what you need. what I meant about the older racetrack np205 is that the input shaft bearing is actually smaller than the one found in the round np205. also the racetrack 205's do not have a seal on the input whereas the round's do. So your all good. As for your twin stick you we still need the same bracket from AA as previously mentionned or if your buying a twin stick kit then you can probably get a bracket from the stick suppiler. This pic is from AA site, disregard the kit as this is not what you need, however the black bracket at the bottom left is what I am talking about
As for the 383 vortec you should be fine with a 32spl rear output and 30 front output. |

Re: NV4500/NP205 question (s)
i used that shifter bracket on my GMC. i wasnt impressed. i would either build my own or rework that one if you used it. it was pretty floppy.

Re: NV4500/NP205 question (s)
The difference in the out put lenght is because of the adapters and drive couplers.
Th400 used long and short ( Np205,Np208 and Np241 ) 4l80e are all long Sm465 all long 32 spline after 85

Re: NV4500/NP205 question (s)
Crewcab is correct about the input shafts, I've heard of long input mated to a TH400 but have only even seen shorts.
Also Like I mentioned before I didn't use the bracket from AA because yes it's flimsy however you will need to come up with something. |

Re: NV4500/NP205 question (s)
The round pattern 205 I have has a long input. I don't know what trans was originally in front of it, but I do know that the TC had ATF in it when I drained it. I plan on buying a new short input shaft from ORD and bolting the trans and transfer case directly together to keep it as short as possible.

Re: NV4500/NP205 question (s)
Yeah, I plan on doing that. I wasn't really sure why a gear driven case was ever had ATF in it in the first place.

Re: NV4500/NP205 question (s)
Some use ATF because of the cold temps not saying it's the best or right.

Re: NV4500/NP205 question (s)
ive seen them with ATF, 90w, 140w, and it was recomended to me that if you have it behind a 4500 to run the synthetic fluid for the 4500 in it in case the cases swap oil. its pretty hard to mess up a 205, as long as it has something oily in it. i use good old 80w90 in mine, but usually try to run a good synthetic.

Re: NV4500/NP205 question (s)
Got my NOS roundy 205 case and input today. Next on the list is a new 32 spline front output. Then wrap it up with new bearings and I got my brand new 05 t-case. Next week the 4500 should be here. Mongo happy
