Re: Bmi built 66

well got the back half welded into the old frame. Im kinda mad at myself because for some reason my rear end is 1/8 out of square when measuring the length of the frame. I had it perfect but I must have bumped it when I was moving stuff to the other side. But really 1/8 isnt to bad for my first time... and I can just adjust the bars a slight bit to bring it back inline.

once I cut the back of the old frame I took the rear cab mounts off so I could slide the new rails in without hitting the rivets. Then I went and bought a 2.5 inch hole saw and cut two holes on each side and one 7/8th hole also.
Then cleaned the metal up and stared all the measuring. I ended the night with welding all the holes I made : )

Re: Bmi built 66

I like how you dropped the crossmember/4link brackets in. Any tips on how you measured and laid it out? I am thinking of doing the same for my 4 link. What thickness material are you using?

I drew all of this in cad before ordering any parts so I could make sure it would work.

the rails are .180 wall except the 4 link cross bar.

If you look at these pics below it should help understand how I layed it out. I wanted a 6 inch off the ground ride height so you can see how I built the metal up under the rails to show where the ground would be. Then with the size tire they want to run I set the rear 4 link mount so the bars were parallel to the ground at ride height on that size tire with them centered in the peak of the notch. After that the front inside mount gives you a good spot to trace where the rails need to be notched for the front 4 link mounts to be set in.
hope this makes sense. If not let me know.

also in the bottom two pics the front mount was to low and would have hit the ground when the truck was layed out. the top pic shows the final spot it was set at

Re: Bmi built 66

That does help. Thank you.

I am going to have to figure it out a bit as my chassis is still on the truck (cant think of a better way to word it). How think was the cross member itself? I have .180 for my notch and just bought a stick of 2x3x.120 to use for cross members, raise the bed, etc.

Re: Bmi built 66

Got a little more done on the frame. I want to make sure this back half stays put so I decided to cut the top of the orginal frame off so I could weld in there. I Also started to form a new top piece that flows into the 4 link cross bar. Soon I will start to mock up the watts link I designed.

Re: Bmi built 66

Made some progress while the little guy was napping. got the rear end 4 link brackets fully welded.
I also pieced in the some metal to make the old frame and the new frame flow. I was going to grind the welds down so it looked like one piece but I think I like the way it looks with the welds.

Re: Bmi built 66

Started building the watts link today. I will admit I made a mistake on my thought process. when I built this I didn't think about what happens when you want to change rear gears... at this time you can take the cover off but I really don't thing you could get he gears out. So my plan is to make a few cuts and modify this one to be a bolt on watts link. overall tho I think its gonna be badass!

Re: Bmi built 66

I decided to move the bag mounting location to a different place then I had original planned. So now I just need to wait till I get some more parts cut on the laser.
