I got a chance last yr to rally a 00ish Burb at Idaho Tuff Truck Comp in mountain home. My good friend let me beat on it all weekend. It still ran afterwords!

Let me add a bit more to this thread.


I just did a 1800 mile road trip again to the same event as posted above. It is ITTC, or Idaho Tuff Truck Comp in Mountain Home ID. This yr the plan was to use a different burb for the comp. I just do it for fun, it actually is a fun, yet serious 4x4 comp. There are different tire classes. My bud and I don't have built rigs to compete in but one of the guys involved invited us to just rally some stock rigs for fun.

So the burb I was going to swap a motor into, was just going to take to much time to put in so I was able to use the same rig as last yr.
So the events are.
Rti ramp
Sled pull
Mud drag
Obstacle course
Rock Course
So we were there just for fun so they let us do things differently. They made us go last at every event.


I drove a 03 1500 Burb 4x4 and the other guy was in a 4wd Trailblazer. They were pretty hammered from last yr but they mechanically "worked".
I scored low at the rti ramp with open diffs and stock suspension . Kyle in the trailblazer nearly rolled but backed down in time. Bastard welded up the rear diff.

So for the sled pull we started our shenanigans! I pulled up to the sled facing it and the trailblazer backed in behind me. Last yr we both barely made it 20ft. This yr, full pull. He let off at the end but I kept going in reverse for a bit and slammed him a bit. I think it was a fast time too.

Obstacle course was the best. Last yr after our solo runs, we begged to let us go side by side in the dirt bike course. We got shut down last yr but got the green light for this yr! We started at the line, but some confusion happened at the start and he got a early jump on me. As I was heading down the first stretch I knew something was wrong, no 4th in low. I was bouncing off the rev limiter most of the time. I might have caught him quicker. In the end he over shot a jump and it allowed a pass. I did a donut waiting for him but I got the W. At the end we played a quick game of tag with the rigs.

Mud pit. I have/had some decent tread mudders and the trailblazer was on stock bald tires. I took the W there and we played bumper cars after words for a sec.

The Rock Course. Basically, I rammed him up into the course until I blew the radiator and tried to go around to ram him from the side, but got stuck along side and called it quits.

Thanks for keeping this thread alive. One of the best threads we have. I can't believe it died off. I wish I had something to contribute. I get back in the woods for firewood or a trail to the river and that's about as rugged as it gets for me these days. i'm boring now

Where abouts? Cool pictures. Best one yet, ey? Larry had invited to ride along one year, way back when. I wanted to but couldn't swing it. I really missed out on a chance of a lifetime.

So we had a loose plan for this year and it centered around Hanksville Utah. Smack dab between Canyonlands and Capital Reef National parks. It's the only place for many miles in any direction with fuel.

I really only had one GPS track nailed down to start out on and we would choose as a group where to go next. We've gone the other way and had hard plans of a very specific trail each day and like clockwork, the plan gets tossed for different reasons and we end up winging it anyway. So we cut to the chase and winged it after day one.

Best one yet comes from many factors. We had a diverse variety of landscapes and elevations, each section of dirt was different than the last. We had alpine forests at 10,000 feet of elevation to be at least 7,000 feet lower at the bottom of a canyon crossing the Dirty Devil River. The trails were not highly technical rock crawling but what they lacked in boulders they made up for in steepness and remoteness. Low gearing going downhill was a must both coming down the mountain and deep into the canyons.

Larry and I joke but are partly serious that one of the goals of the trip is to be away from people. We nailed it. Between traveling during the week and in the depths of summertime heat (I saw 107* at one point) in southern Utah there weren't any other idiots like us out on the trails. Literally, we passed zero folks on the trails. I'm not counting two NP Rangers we came across at different times as they were out there looking for goons like us to warn us of the pending threat of rains and flash flooding that was possible every day we were out there.

We had minimal mechanical issues. Any we did came from mine. The biggest of which was a blown exhaust donut that we fixed in a rest area outside of Capital Reef NP. An hour burned on a hot parking lot and we were back out moving again. Honestly, it couldn't have gone any smoother than if we planned it.

We all had a great time. It was more overland than wheeling for sure, but driving 9 hours out and back also means we don't want to destroy our junk and not be able to make it home. All our trucks are very well equipped to take on a rough trail if we have to. We've done it many times in the past. It just worked out that though remote they weren't hard. That being said I still managed to get winched off a river bank when I couldn't get further and the Waggy with the camper got a tug from a kinetic rope when he couldn't get over a sandy hill on the trail. Both were self-inflicted. I had a hub unlocked and Don was still in 2wd when he hit the hill.

Never say never dude. If you want to tag along, let me or Larry know and we'll make it happen.

When I lived in the Flagstaff area ('81/Mountainaire) I had a typical weekender back country camper for the time. A '71 Custom Deluxe SWB K/10 I'd head out in. Rock crawling wasn't even a thing I ever knew of back then, other than a nasty trail up a cut. I was more about going out, being away, and getting back than getting into extreme wheeling. Follow trails and find a good camping spot. I loved that short period in my life. Nothing like what you guys do. It was within the area. I liked the high desert as well as the alpine country around the Franciscan Peaks and over toward Williams.

The parking lot action here () was going for food in Page before heading over to Moab

Funny thing Tim, page probably hasn’t changed much at all other than APS shutting down and dismantling the power plant. I’m pretty sure I know where that picture was taken. We go thru page a couple times a year on the way to Vegas.

I like Williams a lot, that’s where we always stay before going to the Grand Canyon.

If we lived in the area I'm pretty sure we'd be out in it way more often.

But as much as I love crawling through rougher trails, it's more a means to an end. Those rougher trails are quite the gatekeeper to Subarus, Sprinter vans and other vehicles from getting into primo quiet camping locations. Though the Jeep and Toyota crowd give the best confused looks when me and Larry come lumbering up to a great spot that they thought could keep the Foolsize crowd out too. Much less a couple with campers on the back of each of our trucks.

It is an awesome feeling when those guys are fumbling with setting up ground tents and we are kicked back in our chairs enjoying a nice refreshment.

I was into rock crawling during that era out east and always looked forward to the magazine coverage of the major events. Your Jeep was cutting edge and had the perfect mix of buggy and Jeep. One of my all time favorites during that era for sure! Shortly after this it became all buggy and I lost interest.
