Re: Project "Just an Old Truck"

Well, I wasted the better part of a day painting the firewall plates with paint that was way too expensive and didn't turn out the way I wanted. When they are good and dry I'll scuff them up and shoot them with some cheap semi-gloss black.

Re: Project "Just an Old Truck"

I ordered gm paint code 503 in an aerosol can from Automotivetouchup.com and it is just a little too fresh compared to my not so fresh firewall. I'm going to scuff them back down and repaint them in semi-gloss black. If and when I install the Porterbuilt suspension I'll try to smooth the firewall and have it painted the correct color. The problem I have is wanting certain things to be nice, like the firewall, but not having the talent or budget to do it. I know NOTHING about paint and body work, so unfortunately I am sort of at the limit of what I can do with this truck.

Re: Project "Just an Old Truck"

Sorry to hear about the paint Buck. I'm hitting a similar snag on my truck trying to pick up where my father left off with the bodywork. He is no longer able to do it due to medical reasons and well I'm certainly no bodyman and can't afford to just drop it off at a shop to do.

On a side note looking at your picture, you could probably mask everything off in the engine compartment, clean up your firewall and spray the whole thing, that way it would be uniform looking. You could even do it semi gloss black if you didn't want to do the light green. Did you have to clear over the green when you sprayed it or is that straight out of the can.

I think I'm just going to paint them black and then worry about the firewall later. After all it's a patina truck.

Re: Project "Just an Old Truck"

Thanks for the compliment, you couldn't have better timing I needed to hear something nice about the truck. I am so PO'd at the truck right now I had to come in and calm down a bit. Things are just not going well today...

I am just going to go a different route to make it handle, it will be PB parts but no air.

Trailing arms should be great for handling... I'd think anyway. Wish I had the $ for that setup.

Nothing cosmic, just some good shocks mounted in the right spots and sway bars.

How much much did the aerosol paint cost you? Why not scuff the firewall down, maybe pull the master cylinder away from the firewall, tape up the wiring plug, and put some sheets or paper, etc. over the inner fenders and just spray paint the whole cowl with the paint you bought? It would really make the underhood area pop and being a firewall, it wouldn't have to be perfect.

It would take more than I am willing to do at this point. One day down the road I'll take the front sheet metal off, the eng/trans out, and smooth the firewall the way I want it to look. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Hey buck. Was just going back looking through your thread. And noticed you went with this external trans cooler. Did you also run it thru the radiator?? Also Seems like you used -8 lines or -6 ??
Truck looks great !!

I did not run mine through the radiator. It is an AFCO heat-sink style cooler mounted on the passenger side frame rail, and is connected using -6 braided hose.

Thanks for clearing that up. That's exactly what I have. But some guys were saying I had to run it through the radiator. Also.

Thanks again. Keep trucking...

Many will say it needs to go through the radiator too, but it seems to me that the radiator would heat the fluid. I guess time will tell, if the transmission burns up I'll know I need more cooling!

Made some progress with the A/C today, wiring is connected but needs to be made "neater" and the flexible ducting is in, what a PITA! Well, because here are a couple...

Thanks guys for keeping me pumped up. I'm not sure how to explain this but I am not overly proud of how this is turning out but I know it's safe and functional. Well... I guess we'll see about functional when we charge the system. I'm building a driver, not a GG show winner but I have trouble accepting that at times. Like many on this board, I am limited by both budget and ability, and it is hard to see the builds turned out by Delmo or n2billet and fall so short of their genius. I think about what they would do and check their old build threads before I start an upgrade, and then I have to come back to earth, so it sometimes takes me some time to "settle" on a plan and execute it. This A/C install seems to be taking forever so I'm happy to see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.
