Very intersting thread and articles.
So many options to pick from now or do your self...
Where do you get bosch relays in 20 amps? Surely I need a vehicle to look it up at the part store?

This all explains why in a prior 72 Pickup one night my dash headlight switch got hot, could smell something burning, but it all stayed working (whew!)

OK ; I installed the wiring kit and relays on Monday and finally got a chance to drive at night , I'm running H4 Ultra Blue bulbs with stock wattage 55-65 watts ? Made a big difference just bumping up the Voltage , Might try 100 watt bulbs pretty soon just to see how they look at night .

Has anyone installed a inline fuse to power the relay's and what Amp fuse are you using ?

Fuse size is determined by the wire size you ran feeding the lights.

14 guage wire: - 15 amp fuse
12 guage wire: - 20 amp fuse
10 guage wire: - 30 amp fuse

Using a automotive style non-resetable breaker works great.
Got mine from NAPA for cheap.

Question

OK, so if one of you guys was to 'boil it all down' here, what would a 67-72 chevy truck owner buy from Summit to "upgrade" his wiring and keep the standard three prong type single headlight plugs at the bulb end?

I'm confused on which 'harness' to buy to give me more juice to the lights.

Thank a lot,
72longbed

Vtblazer (kurt) posted the right ones to use on standard 67-72 trucks.

You could also upgrade the lights with that harness.

The one I posted was cheaper, and would require you to splice the stock connectors on.

OK, I just ordered the wires from Summit. Now what else do I need and do these wires come with instructions?

Yes ; there will be a wireing diagram , It's pretty much a no-brainer ,just place the harness under the radiator top mounts following the original wiring harness , ( You will not remove any of the original harness ) , install the relays , Plug the one male H4 connector into the original passenger side female H4 connector . reinstall your bulb's and eyebrows , Connect the power wires to the relays , Ground all the ground wires , connect 12V power to Battery . and Test.

vtblazer thanks for the part numbers from Summit and the night time drive report.

Bad news is, that all you people made them go on backorder at Summit available tennatively 10 days out for the harness and 55/100W bulbs. Bummer!

Question: So you buy these wiring kits. What/how do you replace the relay when it goes bad? Can you order that specific relay seperately? I really doubt all the relay prongs are standardized to fit all the possible couplers. Basically, are the relays + couplers a matched set????

Standard 30A relay.

You can also buy the harness I posted (not BO when I checked) and splice in your connectors. Saves 12.00

Note, if you want to upgrade the lights, you need to purchase new housings. The Hella ones are decent and come with DOT legal bulbs...

Exclamation Help Please!!

Just called Summit to order my new harness and was told "they do not make one for the old sealed beam type headlights". I informed the salesman that a lot of our 67-72 enthusiasts were buying this upgrade through Summit and his response was, "not from Summit". ????????????????????????????????

Is it possible that this upgrade requires changing out your headlights to another style light?? I am trying to just buy the harness that will allow me to use my 'stock type' new sealed beam lights that are already installed. It's a Chevy, so there are only two headlights.

I asked in a previous Post and did not get a specific part number to do what I'm trying to do. Did somebody forget to tell the rest of us this is not an upgrade for sealed beam type lights??

Any help would be great.
Thanks,
72longbed

VTblazer posted the right one to run. Just order it online and it's plug and play with your existing headlights.

The idiot you talked with probably doesn't know that an H3 and an H4 buld use the same connector.

My lights DO NOT have removable bulbs. Is the part number that VTblazer posted for SEALED BEAMS or not??

An answer to this question will clear up everything.

Thanks for you help with this,

Based on : http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...=KeywordSearch

Here are some highlights from the link:
"H6024 replacement unit, with HB2 replaceable bulb."

"In addition, they have replaceable bulbs, so you don't have to buy a whole new unit if one burns out."

So I would have to say NO, they are not sealed beams; they have replaceable bulbs.

So the ones from Summit will work with both (H3) and (H4)? You have to put a 30amp fuse in lue of the 20amp fuse? Is that about it? I have one of them wire kits coming from Summit and it might have been the last one? They were on sale. Just want to make sure I do the '70 right. Are both the (H3) and (H4) three prong hook up as OE? Thanks.

There were several from Summit we're talking about... the one I posted is the cheapest and requires you to splice in your connectors. You can do this with any of them.

The one VTblazer posted is plug and play.

I suggest fusing anything like this that's not already fused, at the size of the relay you're using.

Question Still Confused?

I guess I'm not following along properly here. I was hoping someone could provide the proper part number for the Summit HARNESS that will allow me to use my FACTORY sealed beam headlights without having to cut, splice, or any other modification. The headlight plugs on my 34 year old wiring harness are worn out any way, so I was looking forward to the NEW HARNESS having new plugs on it.

Maybe one of you guys that has done this improvement can give us the HARNESS PART NUMBER that will plug right into the factory sealed beam headlights. I do not want to replace the factory headlights. Is this possible to do??

Thanks,
72longbed
