Re: 1964 GMC 1500 "crustine" semi- build.
If oil or grease gets into the solinoid on the starter you will have the problems you describe. The solinoid is a heavy duty magnetic switch that actuates the starter.

Re: 1964 GMC 1500 "crustine" semi- build.
I agree… before you drop money on another starter, pull that one remove the solenoid and clean it up… when you pull the phenolic cover, you can clean up the contacts and hopefully that will be easier than dropping money on another starter...

Re: 1964 GMC 1500 "crustine" semi- build.
So Crustine's starter has been rebuilt and is working wonderfully. I also have new battery cables and connections. And since Crustine has been running so well I rewarded her with a new cap. lol!

Re: 1964 GMC 1500 "crustine" semi- build.
Thanks DW! And here is a new video! This is a small acceleration test I did....shifting between 3000 and 3400 through the gears at about 3/4 throttle. Had it up to 53 in 4th when I let off. Not super fast, but a boat load of torque!

Re: 1964 GMC 1500 "crustine" semi- build.
Well I scrapped this crappy old seat for an original style seat. Heck it even has near mint original upholstery that has been covered by 2 seat covers for some 50 years!
I'll be putting my gray seat cover over it to help protect the rips on the seat. Also got the front turn signals to work. Drove her around today. Lotta fun as usual! See ya!

Well Crustine's old mirrors were no more....they had a tendency to move where ever they pleased....so I got some more bling.

Re: 1964 GMC 1500 "crustine" semi- build.
Well I've been spending all my time and money with Crustine lately. lol. She's cheaper. Anyhow, the old bottom rad hose sprung a leak so I got a new one coming from Napa. Also since they were having a sale on oil filters I was able to get some filters for my V6 at $2.88 a piece so I'm quite happy with that...went ahead and bought a couple of them. Thinking I'm going to run Straight 40 in that engine as it is a higher mileage engine. 10W-30 is what is factory, but I think for an older engine a little more thickness ain't gonna hurt a thing. Especially solid lifter cams. Will be making a set of stakes for the bed as it will be time to haul fire wood soon. Debating on getting the new dual exhaust put on soon as well. Later guys!

Re: 1964 GMC 1500 "crustine" semi- build.
Well...what started out to be a simple hose leak turned out to be a week long fight. lol Last weekend I noticed the old lower hose was dripping coolant...so I bought a new one and installed that...refilled...and I noticed its leaking WAY worse than with the OLD hose! So friday I purchase some band clamps....tighten that sucker down....still leaks...swap out the radiator...tighten everything down and drive it most of the day saturday...no leaks....take it out this morning...park it....starts leaking Again. GRR. So I decided to put the brand new radiator I had stashed away for the 66 in there....Clamped that botton hose down until the clamp bolt bottomed out...then went ahead and purchased a new top hose...drove it around...so far so good..and she's running cooler. I tell ya....sometimes this truck is as bad as a stinkin F$$D! See ya!
