Re: mylow53 build

I assume you mean your doors. I swapped doors. I was told it was much easier to swap than to try and swap the guts. I also wanted the older style door handles. My '54 had a push button handle.

I bought new ones 4 years ago and have had no issues with them falling.

Find a set of the 48-51 doors and transfer the vertical tracks. It's not a direct bolt in, but easy enough to do.

Re: mylow53 build

all most done with the rear install. brad should be sending me the frame this week to begin the mock up phase. we installed a for 9" in the rear with a limited slip. the back of the the pumpkin is suposed to look old school. how i don't know if anyone understands what it's supposed to look like let me know... reguardless i wanted to install the airbags seporatly from the shocks so i can switch the shocks and keep the rearbags... enjoy

Re: mylow53 build

welcome to mock up phase!! i got the frame in on saturday and began to put her togeather. well wouldn't you know it theres a reason they do this... aparently the rear axel's width is to tight to the frame. the rotors actually scrape the side of the bed have a look at the shots.. i guess i'll do the trailer fender trick to make 3 " of space for the tire... any advise would be aprechated....

Re: mylow53 build

also i wanted to ask you guys. the rear can go down another inch or so due to the c noch, but it hits the bottom of the bed. i've seen some guys put a crome bump in the middle of the bed, just the size of the pumpkin. i want to keep the bed as close to original. i don't want to do an across the bed hump. and raising the bed may be difficult... any ideas

Greg-

I raised my floor two inces and also added mini tubs due to the width of my rear tires. I have attached some pics to give you a better idea.

I bought them from this web site http://dancarpenters.com/tubb.html

They are 2 3/4 inch wide, They are expensive but they are very nice qualtity. They also offer different widths.

Raising the floor wasn't that hard. The hard part is what to do with the back of the bed at the tailgate. When you raise the floor it will leave you with a gap when you lower the gate. I added a steel filler panel to cover mine. I can take a pick of this if it will help. I am also running a rear roll pan though.

This is the before picture. It gives yopu an idea of how large the tubs are. I cut quite a bit off.

Fishised and welded.

Looking good.

Re: mylow53 build

Re: mylow53 build

The fenders are nice. I saw them being installed in an old tech article in one of the truck mags. Personally "less is more" I dont care for people that use full size fendors or wheel tubs.

I can understand keeping the bed as is. Due to my frame, it was a must for my set up.

I am a few weeks behind you as for the mck up phase. I need to finish some body work prior to putting the truck back together.

Re: mylow53 build

My truck sits on a modified G-body frame (Monte Carlo, Cutlass, Grand Prix). I am not sure if it is the same as an El camino frame. I would think that an El Camino frame is different because this really kicks up where the bed of the Camino would be.

Re: mylow53 build

i can get a pretty good price on the march. the engine was 4200... don't quote me on any part numbers. and yes to it came with holly 650 and aluminum manafold....

just finished raising the bed 2 inches i'm sure there are eiser ways to acomplish the lift, but i did it my way. i added to the frount of the bed crossmember by putting a 1 1/2 inch piece of flat stock. so the front bolted in the same spot. created some custom one off (so they say) extensions to the crossmember so i can use the stock mounting wood. in the rear we welded 2 peices of angle iron to form a 2" c channel. the overlayed metal formed the perfect notch to fit the rear sill. by the way the boy did all the welding and fab work on the rear. strangly enough it all fits... now the diff and axel can get down. since i don't have the tires yet i don't know how low but the top lug bolt is 2 " from the botom of the fender in the rear. now for the purest out there everything i've done to the bed (short of the massive suspension mods) can be unbolted and put back in the original position....

I admire you and your son's work. I took my son to the Paso car/truck show and he said he wants to "make a wheelie nice hot rod". I hope that as he grows older, it stays in his blood. I'd like to build a Chevy with him. Big props to you and your son on a great job!

Re: mylow53 build

thanks he actually is getting the hang of welding... we were putting the the mastercylynder in tuesday and since the frame guys boxed the frame at the usual mounting position, i couldn't get my hand in the frame. i tryed a stick with a wrench taped to it. still couldnt get the last one. i ask the boy to try and he could reach them all....
